That's pretty awesome.

I wish my Dad could have lived to see the WWII Museum....That's a special place. We have one of the dedication bricks in his name, along with his brother, and several other relatives....

I love this. Can’t do enough for the small number of these heroes still with us!

That's nice and kind of sad, too. It must make them think back on the "good old days".

Nice these folks are being recognized.

My pops was born in '26, got the Depression in Appalachia at age four and then WWII for a dessert.

He played his hand about as well as you could.

Does anyone know approximately how many WWII vets are still living? I've never had the opportunity to meet one but I hope to before they're all gone. And the museum is incredible - I love that it's only a short drive away for me. I try to go a few times a year.

according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, only 558,000 of that number are still alive

It is estimated that 372 WWII veterans pass away every day.

If you're that close to the museum, you should be able to meet and talk to some.

I have a 98 year pilot I keep in touch with. He was in a squadron with my Dad in the Pacific.

Me and my buddy got to take his dad when it was the Dday museum. (Which he didn't like because he was a marine). Though at the time they already started adding Pacific stuff.

Was crazy, because ny friend was born in 1983 and his dad in 1922.
He had a sister older than his mom. Lol

I know a guy in his fifties who's the son of a WWI veteran. When he was born his father was in his seventies.

Just to be clear, you responded with a quote to me that I didn't make.

My grandfather was a WWII USMC Vet in the Pacific theater. He was on three front lines: Guam, Guadalcanal and Bouganville and he just passed away in November 2015. He was a true American Patriot and he loved his country. I can honestly say that his generation was truly remarkable and I don’t think there will ever be another like it.
He and my grandmother made several trips down to the WWII Museum and he loved it every time. Not a day went by that he didn’t talk about his experiences during the war.

A tip of the cap to all veterans who proudly served and still serve this great nation and especially our WWII veterans who are still with us. Thank you for your service to our country!

A good book about depression era Appalachia is Ava’s Man by Rick Bragg.

Mine was born in 25, graduated high school and enlisted in the Army the day he turned 17 with his fathers signature. Island hopped all over the South Pacific “shooting Japs” and had bullet holes all over his body to show for it. Got drunk on August 6 every year because he was sitting on a troop transport in the Phillipines ready for Operation Downfall, of which a very good chance he would not have survived.

He became a veterans' advocate after Forrest Dump.
