And this is why this is difficult to discuss.
Not everyone who served served in combat. The largest increases in DV history have occurred in relative peacetime.
Even in peacetime, servicement get hurt all the time. They should be compensated.
That doesn't mean there isn't RAMPANT abuse of the system and many, many people who shouldn't be on it are. That's just welfare and abuse.
I wasn't in combat, but i was in the arena during conflict. all of my injuries occurred in garrison. i do have a % i receive, and while some think it may be high, others who see me crawling on the ground several times a year feel as though i don't get enough. 8 years of just regular marine corps training, combat or not, takes a toll on your body, especially now at an older age.
i work, i'm well compensated in my work, but that has 0 to do with what the VA pays\should pay me. Not everyone you see walking upright is in a good place at that moment, or behind closed doors.

they don’t require you to not make more than a certain amount in income like SSDI?
Like I said above that category is total and permanently disabled. Not 100%. 100% has nothing to do with your working ability. This is a benefit these people agreed to when they signed up for this job. Many of these military positions beat the absolute shite out of your body. Its nothing in comparison to a civilian job.

Is it really that shitty? An E-1 in the Army makes $28k/year with full medical, dental, and vision. Lives on base or gets BAH. Tack on benefits and housing that would have to paid in the private sector, and you're knocking on the door of $50k a year. Not bad for a screw up who couldn't finish high school. Yes, the downside is they own you.
Overall, I'm sure there's abuse as with everything. If it's there for the taking, people are going to take what they can. Nothing is immune to this.

But the way it's worded does cause much confusion just like the OP assumed.

worked with a guy who was "100%" disabled due to a bad back.
Highly unlikely it was just his back issues. That's just the part he mentioned to you. No one wants to divulge all their medical issues to everyone they know. To get 100% for back alone would require "To obtain a 100% VA disability rating for back pain on its own, there must be a total immobilization of the spine, where both the thoracolumbar (lower/middle back) and cervical (neck) areas show no mobility."

I’m a vet. I do not get any type of disability…however, if the government offered up any money or assistance I’d damn sure take it. As much as they take from me, hell yeah I’d take it. You’d be a fool to say nah I’m good.

I work with a lot of vets that have to be talked into to taking disability that they're entitled to, I know there's a lot of people that game the system but I'd rather see some of that than anyone that needs it be denied, and yes there are a lot of REMF frickups that had nowhere else to go but still, wittingly or unwittlimngly they are putting themselves in a position to be put in harm's way on behalf of the country

That recruiting office was open to everybody

I'm a veteran. You can't just claim it and get it. It's a very long process. If you claim it, they will send you to a doctor that specializes in whatever your claim is. You also have to have some kind of documentation"
100% agree. Of all the hills to die on for the OT, yall pick this one. You have no idea what it takes and the toll on your body, just to make it out of boot camp in the 80's. I have jumped out of helicopters, was pushed off a high platform, was mentally tortured and busted both of my knees and my ankles, all while serving. So, should i just ignore those things? I lost most of my hearing from being in an artillery unit for years. Should i just ignore that?
Unless you have served, you have no idea.

quote:yes, I know a married ex military couple that both receive 100% disability
I know of 3 people receiving 100% veteran disability checks ($4,200 a month) plus lots of additional goodies, who are perfectly functioning
So that’s $8,400 a month - neither saw combat. So I’m not sure how they are disabled. The wife participates in rodeos. Maybe she’s crazy, I don’t know.
NGL, I was always excited when they were in charge of the snack for soccer games bc they brought the best stuff.

Tell your friends I am aware of veterans claiming similar disability benefits fraud who have been indicted on such charges.

I dislocated my shoulder while in the Army. Still gives me trouble at times but I can function normally. I guess it's a pride thing for me. There are many veterans that deserve the disability and there are those that game the system. Just like anything else in life.

Thought about it, but I don't have any PTSD, can get out of bed every morning with no issues and work a 40 hour week. If I legitimately needed it, I would be at the VA office.

that's as of right now, my experience with both shoulders is that early trauma can and will lead to issues down the road, cumulative effect of normal wear and tear of aging exacerbated by the early trauma

I knew an old guy that was a Ranger in Korea. Both feet were frostbitten ,he hobbled around so likely could have qualified for disability. Not only that never applied for Social Security even though he ran a successful business until he was 80 and paid S.S. taxes all those years.
His widow told me he was shot 6 times, had shrapnel in his body that would periodically come to the surface, was bayoneted through the L shoulder, was burned L side of his face(had obvious scars from that).
She would urge him to apply for S,S. but he would get angry ,said he didn’t want a G,D. thing from U.S. govt.,He was bitter about all his injuries and his
buddies that got killed and then we just pulled out. He expected that we went there to fight and win like WW 2,not fight awhile and then leave.
