amitch11- my BIL had colon cancer. He had surgery and that took care of it. It scared the hell out of him too. It is normal to be scared and confused. You hear all these new medical terms, tests, etc.. Make up your mind to fight this and beat it. I have advanced prostate cancer and I look at it as a part of life now. I know many others have gone before me so 'if they did it, so can I'. Keep up the fight. Best to you.

Nothing compares with a doc saying you have cancer. Mine was right kidney that was removed and eight years later still clean.
I have a close friend that was diagnosed with stage three to four colon cancer. She had surgery and the chemical pleasantries and is doing great. Was in her fifties when it happened, but was in great physical condition. No matter what condition you are in now, start working to make yourself stronger. Every little bit will help, and you will need it.
Your road to recovery will be long but you will make it. Having an understanding wife by your side is the greatest strength anyone can have.
Best of luck to you and God bless.

Well, life is probably going to get harder, but you can do it. Be smart and follow doctors' orders. And follow your heart otherwise. Be good to people.

My elderly neighbor had this. He was scared just like you. Had the surgery and poof - like it never happened.

Good luck - hope the same happens for you

I got the same diagnosis in 1990. Surgery took out about half of my colon and I went through six months of chemo. I've been cancer free ever since. Have the inconvenience of a colonoscopy ever three years, but otherwise live a normal life.

Best of luck.

Doctors moving fast is good. You are 47 and healthy and they caught it early. You might get surgery only. You could also have some combination of surgery and some other treatment. The surgeon will be driving this bus for you for now. You want an oncology surgeon, or a GI surgeon with lots of oncology experience. Emory is a great cancer hospital. This isn't going to be easy but it is very treatable. Make sure you have someone with you at all appointments. No matter how much you listen, your mind won't be able to take everything in. Also, get a journal type book to write everything down and keep it organized. This is a link to a brochure with a list of questions to think about asking your docs.

Good luck, and as others have said, mental attitude is important. Lean on others around you when you need to. Let them support you. They need something to do to feel like they are helping you as well. You'll beat this. A year from now this will be in you rear view.

ery bad news today
Have been informed I have colon cancer and must begin treatment immediately including surgery.

I am pretty numb and, well, scared. Has anyone else been through this and maybe offer advice? Thanks - amitch

Certainly understand being scared.

I know people who are great healthy now after have colon cancer...it was very tough time but they are free from cancer and love being nick named

"Semi colon"...

Hang tough, sorry you're going through this...the good news is you will be in good hands and it's treatable with great success rate

Keeps everything in perspective for all of us
