Did race play a role in these sentencings for similar crimes?

When Cory Batey was a 19-year-old standout football player at Vanderbilt, he raped an unconscious woman. The ample evidence, including security cameras showing the unconscious woman being carried into a dorm room and cellphone photos and videos of the sexual assault, was clear — Cory Batey sexually assaulted the woman. In April, a jury found Batey guilty of three felony counts including aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery.
He was immediately remanded into custody and must serve a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 to 25 years in prison.
What Batey did was reprehensible. The judge and jury treated his crime as such.
That's what makes the case of Brock Turner, a 19-year-old standout swimmer at Stanford who raped an unconscious woman, all the more infuriating. As was the case with Batey, ample evidence existed that Turner was guilty. Eyewitnesses actually caught him in the act as he sexually assaulted an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. A jury agreed and Turner was found guilty of multiple felony rape charges. Turner, though, was given a six-month jail sentence and told he could be released on good behavior in as little as three months. He won't even go to an actual prison, but will remain in the local jail during that time.

IMO it was probably less racism than it was classism. Especially after you read his Dad's statement.

Probably more of a cultural thing. Southern culture is more serious about violent crime and punishment than West coast culture. Classism is a big part of it too.

Sorry for the hijack (they should both rot in prison) but is there a better example of a "before" picture for a future habitual offender?

That's not necessarily a good thing.

It happened, deal with it.
People of other races get off all the time.

People that do shite like this are absolutely fricked up in the head and will do it again if the opportunity presents itself. I haven't read the viral letter that the victim wrote because it makes me sick, but I think they should all be beaten to a fricking pulp. How our justice system can turn a sex offender loose after 3 months in a local jail blows my mind.

How about we wait until Brandon Vandenburg gets retried and sentenced (assuming conviction again) before we start comparing these cases?

BluegrassBelle beat me to it.
Money was likely the driving force behind the slap on the wrist for the Stanford swimmer and the harsher punishment for the Vanderbilt football player.
In this country, there has been a precedent established that once you reach a certain tax bracket or celebrity status, your race will not hinder your ability to bypass the criminal law.

We just had a guy here that was a notorious gang leader who only served about 6 months for the sexual assault of a minor. He went on to murder three people (two teenagers for witnessing the murder of the first). And I'm pretty sure it was because he snitched on some other gang members to shorten his sentence.
It's absolutely absurd how easily someone can get easy time for a sexual assault/rape if they have the right lawyers and the right judge.

Bingo.
And there have been plenty of other athletes in recent memory who benefited from similar favorable treatment despite the nature of their crimes.

Maybe you should research the case before making accusations of racism. There are two indivduals involved and the second one (the white one) is due for his retrial. He was already convicted once.
Now if Vandenburg is given a less punishment than Batey, then you may have a point.

Case 1
seems like the judge didn't have a choice.

Different sentences? Yes racism must be the reason.

I wonder why a female who is legally drunk is deemed incapable of being able to decide she wants to have sex, but a male who is legally drunk is considered rational enough to make the same decision? In fact a drunk male is supposed to be able to tell when a female is too drunk to be able to consent to sex.
What is a 23 year old female's responsibility when it comes to drinking with a 20 year old male? Aren't there laws against providing alcohol to those too young to drink alcohol?
Could those possibly be mitigating circumstances in the case of Turner?

The black dude straight up raped a chick and had his homebois video the assault.
The white dude "raped" a chick in slut-denial.
There's really no comparison between the two.

I will place the "who is to blame" on the one who is still awake. I get your argument, but all argument is gone if you have sex with a person who is passed out.

When two guys roll up on you raping a girl behind a dumpster who is unconscious, it's far from "slut-denial".
I've known a lot of guys who were drunk but knew not to frick a girl who is blacked out.
