I see 461 and 466. Damn, no Warhorses of 465.

ETA: Actually, #28 may be a 465 decal. Can't really tell
I do know we were "YJ" on the tail number.

Bumping this thread because I have a question for Vader.

Vader, I’m looking at getting into building model planes, but I have basically no experience in building them. I’m really wanting to do a B-17, which I’ve found some great looking kits for, but I don’t want to buy something that I’ll be in over my head trying to build. Do you have any recommendations for brands that might be good for a beginner, but will still be a good quality kit?

No turret doesn't always mean it's a tank destroyer. Almost all US tank destroyers had turrets. M18 hellcat, M10, M36, and the British Archer and Achilles
And the German Stug was an infantry assault gun that did a pretty good job as a tank destroyer, but the Germans had purpose-built Tank Destroyers as well

It wasn't called the "Beast slayer" for nothing....

It's a GD tank destroyer.

I saw this thread on the front page and worndered what it was doing here.

As for your question, if you’re wanting to build a B-17, I highly recommend the Academy 1/72 scale B-17F.

Academy makes great kits with parts that fit together well. Their detail is nice as well. I built this one a few years ago…

You’ll probably have to order this kit from Amazon. Another option, one easier to get in fact, is the Revell 1/48 scale B-17G

They sell this kit at most Hobby Lobby locations. As far as Revell kits goes, it’s ok. But it’s a HUGE model. So unless you want to suspend it from the ceiling or have a large shelf to keep it on, I’d skip this one.

Great information, man. I appreciate it! I’ve been looking at that Academy one, as it’s the infamous Memphis Belle plus the size would be better for me. How hard would that kit be for a beginner?

It’s been a few years since I built that one. And I’ve built Lord knows how many since so I don’t remember much about it. Overall though, knowing Academy, it should not be too difficult.

Cool. I think that’s the one I’ll go with them. I’m excited about it! Thanks again for the info!

Will do, hopefully I’ll have time soon to work on it once I get it. One further question, what paint set and glue do you recommend?
