I generally think this is pretty stupid, and I don't think words should be off-limits to one race but not another, but that guy's a dumbass for actually saying the words in class

Is this a joke? Think about the position you are advocating. You are now suggesting that people should not publicly use foreign words if those foreign words happen to sound like offensive English words, even if those foreign words are commonly used, relevant, and have completely inoffensive meanings. That's preposterous.

Should he be reprehended for saying “negro” if someone asks him what black is in Spanish?

Well, frankly, I think he should be able to use the phrase "n*gger-rigged" in an engineering discussion if he wants. But that's not the world we live in, and nobody asked him "what noise do speakers of Mandarin Chinese make during logical pauses?" anyway.

He was teaching a class about communications, and he felt the need to make the point that different languages say different things during these pauses (a point which seems obvious to me), and he elected to use probably the worst possible language for his purpose.

That's stupid, and that's not a guy I'm going to stand up for.

It also means “THAT” though. This is Knights Who Say Ni bullshite.

“Professor, could you tell me what the word “That” is in Mandarin?”
“Eeeeekkkk, don’t say the dirty word!”
“What dirty word?”
“The one you just said.”
“How can I know that word when you won’t tell me what it is?”
“Eeeekkkk!!! Stop saying that!!! Ahhh, I said that!”

I don't know why but the cancel culture thing gets me worked up. I think I am getting old, normally wouldn't give a frick, but people literally are getting canceled for saying shite on accident or because people take something out of context. All it takes is offending one person.. And it can cost someone a job.. Even end a career.

So we really are calling certain languages racist now? “Don’t speak Chinese, it’s offensive to me.”

Dude, he’s probably not a racist and never made a connection between naige and the N-Bomb. I never made the connection and speak Mandarin, and it took morons like yourself to point out on this site that some Chinese people were shouting the N-Bomb on repeat for me to make that connection. No, it’s you being an idiot not the professor.

Others have already pointed out how the color black in Spanish is negro, so are people supposed to just stop using the word because it sounds like an English word? Also, in some Spanish speaking countries, darker complected people, especially women, will be called “negra”, it’s nothing bad and actually a term of endearment. People finding racist stuff in everything are in many cases the real racist.

Right, it doesn’t include someone 100 % innocently speaking his native language.

A PhD communications professor at a prestigious university never made that connection? In the era of BLM has couldn't give a lecture on logical pauses (not Chinese- he injected that) without saying something that sounded just like the #1 worst slur against black people?

Come on, man. All I've got is a BS from a little backwoods college and I could give a perfectly fine lecture on logical pauses without saying something offensive.

Maybe try this thought exercise: if this guy were your employee, or your child, and someone complained to you about the example he decided to use, wouldn't you think it was a stupid thing to do?

I think the state of denial necessary to believe this guy was 100% innocent and unwitting here is just the right wing equivalent of "Orange Man Bad." We don't have to buy any potential indictment of PC culture hook, line, and sinker.

Try this thought experiment, speak in your native language and don’t use certain words or pauses that are super common and innate.

I think it is more likely that he was simply using the most common word in his native language than he just wanted to drop some N bombs.
