Really?

I suspect there's a whole lot of competence there, but it's been a long time since we've done naval shite against another real navy.

I really would like to sign up and contribute, but the chance of getting stuck with some bum arse command doing dumb shite for 6 years really puts me off from it.

The military is all about image and it runs the largest PR machine in the world. Military commanders want Americans to be confident in their armed forces. When something like this occurs the military will start firing people starting from the top down. It gives off the impression that something is being done to address these issues.

He was already scheduled to retire in the next few weeks anyway.

He's got to be from Louisiana with a name like that?

Watched a doc on the Falklands war the other day. It was impressive to see what a nation like Argentina could do to a top 10 navy. Two top 5 navies going head to head would be a bloodbath.

There's gotta be a culture of complacency, or something

Our Navy isn't what it was 10 years ago. I have a retired Navy buddy. Obama slashed their funds. Half the fleet isn't battle worthy.

I was reading the book "Discipline: The Annopolis Way" by Mike Nemeth earlier this evening. It gives great insight into the discipline techniques and leadership lessons taught at our nation's fourth best military academy and how events like this occur in the Navy.

I think it's this and I'd venture to say it's Navy wide. Our sailors aren't disciplined enough to watch their radars or look through binoculars for a long time without getting bored and complacent and start playing with their smartphones.

Is that true or is he saying that because he hates BO?

Read more about international relations involving strategic decisions.

Especially between the US and Russia and the Cold War.

It's not enough to develop the ability to do something. You also conceal it so it has maximum effect when you need it. You don't play your hand to allow your adversary to recognize the action and begin to develop counters.

It's the reason why the F-22 didn't fly internationally for a very long time: they didn't want non-American radars to observe whatever signature they could find.

Not sure his feelings on BO but I have no reason to doubt him. He was in Naval intelligence and while retired still has close ties to the navy.

I was listening to something on the radio this morning discussing that some of the Navy pitfalls recently may be due to the lack of nautical conflict given our involvement in mostly a ground and air based on
Conflict over the last decade or so.

That would lead our naval forces not as "realword" experienced as previous decades prior.

Don't know how.much truth to that, but thought it was interesting.

We have an entire generation of young people that can't write in cursive, because they weren't taught because they "didn't need it".

You sound like my Mom. When I was in HS she was worried sick that I couldn't write in cursive but instead could type like a champ. She thought I'd be a secretary taking dictation.

She still carefully writes everything in cursive and now complains about how I'm going too fast for her to follow.

Cursive is faster than standard fyi.

Also a question for both of these incidents. Once it was obvious there was a collision coming why was the alarm not sounded for stations? If irc soldiers that died were sleeping at the time of the collision.

I thought about someone intentionally ramming Navy ships.

The USS John McCain spent some time this summer around those man-mad islands Chia is trying to build in international waters.
