They must have had someone from the galley steering the ship while the boatswain's mate went for mid rats

Operations officer, PILOTHOUSE
BMOW probs took cash card to get a red bull for 02-07 watch and forward lookout looking port. OOD was prob giving zero fricks driving 3kts to conserve fuel in a poorly placed OPBOX by the Nav so the barely qualified ENS conning officer could get practice on rules of the road... which they failed since they were hit on the starboard side and appears they were trying to turn to port.
Or engineering took control of equipment for 3M and weak arse OOD didn't check them on it. No way they were at flight ops (instant RoW, am running lights dimmed) that early in the morning. What the frick was CIC and the CICWO doing? Esp on a DDG. The OSs were probably eating fritos around the DRT. They were too far out if any maritime layers form IVO Japan, so no restricted vis.
Had to have been pitch black, no moon, mastheads high and in line on the cargo ship, with some type of bullshite CIC drill going on or an engineering casualty in which they should've thrown up Red over Res anyways. Worst part, merchant ships have 2 ppl max on their Bridges and they are elite, pretty much on a time is money 18kt straight path. A USN ship has like min 5-6 ppl on the bridge plus lookouts AND a team in Combat monitoring radar/DR table.
Green table time. Sad day from this former SWO. Embarrassing. Praying for those 7.

Unfortunately they were apparently killed in their bunks.

Basically he is saying the navy fricked up.
After looking at the damage, it looks like the navy's ship fault

Hernandez kid grew up a few miles from me. Per his cousin he was asleep in his bunk when it happened. Terrible.

That's one good thing. I hope they were all sleeping so they didn't even know it happened.

Aside from the fact that a USN DDG shouldn't allow a 700' container carrier to sneak up on it, what do you see from the damage that makes you think it was the Navy's fault? Do you think the Fitzgerald crossed the Crystal's bow? Couldn't similar damage be done if the Crystal overtook the Fitz from starboard at a shallow angle, say 15 or 20 degrees?
