Hopefully they were killed by the impact.
It would have been terrifying to be sound asleep and suddenly woken up by the collision and the berthing compartment rapidly flooding. Probably pitch black, maybe some emergency lighting was working. It must have been complete mayhem.

Damage on the navy ship was on the starboard side. Damage on the containership was on the port bow. Just this basic information would lead most to believe that the navy vessel was the give way vessel and the containership was the stand on vessel.
