when i looked at my last bill, it had about 20 things they were charging me for.

eta: just checked a 2014 bill. tuition looks to be about 60-64% of the total amount paid that semester.

spend $10K to collect $1500

sounds about right

Exactly. I'm sure it cost a lot of money to send those U.S. Marshals out. Time to be reasonable and declare at least some of the student loan debt as uncollectible.

good Lord YG, thats your definition of reasonable? Just write it off? How bout the borrowers be reasonable and make a concerted effort to pay back what they owe? Or do you want to cover the bad debt?

If that's what the banks determine, so be it.

I'd love for you to elaborate on what is reasonable and what debt should be considered not collectible.

For some people, $400-$600 a month is a huge deal, like life changing money. They'd rather have bad credit than spend that money every month, especially if they got a useless degree and are working a job that doesn't afford them the ability to repay the loan and have a decent life.

So you're saying their poor life choices have consequences?! I shudder to think.

It would be a judgment call. If, for example, someone was making $1000 month take home and had a $400 a month principal payment due, waive 3/4 and make him or her pay $100 a month.

Or extend it, then once they get a better job making more money they can start paying it off faster.

Lawyers can be the life of the party, but then again ...

I never would have thought SFP was a lawyer, he doesn't seem shifty.

We should have declared the Wall St bailout money we gave out as uncollectable too. Those banks were really struggling to make ends meet.

We try to protect the unfortunate and disenfranchised, not the huge greedy banks.

no chance to garnish wages?

no chance to add that money onto a loan that he has taken in last 20 years?
