I see those damn things in urinals everywhere. Feel bad for the people who have to fish those things out.

NEW YORK -- The cigarette smoking rate among U.S. adults dropped to another all-time low last year, with 1 in 11 adults saying they were current smokers, according to government survey data released this week.

Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, and it’s long been considered the leading cause of preventable death.

The preliminary findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were based on survey responses from more than 24,200 adults. In the survey, CDC officials defined current cigarette smoking as smoking at least 100 cigarettes in a lifetime and now smoking every day or some days.

In the mid-1960s, 42% of U.S. adults were smokers. The rate has been gradually dropping for decades, due to cigarette taxes, tobacco product price hikes, smoking bans, public education campaigns and changes in the social acceptability of lighting up in public.

In 2024, the percentage of current adult smokers fell below 10% for the first time. Last year, it was 9%, according to the new survey.

The use of electronic cigarettes has been inching up among adults, but has held about steady in 2025, at about 7%.

“The continued decline in smoking is a monumental public health achievement that has saved millions of lives and billions in healthcare costs,” said Yolonda Richardson, president and chief executive of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy and research organization.

All that may be true, but did " Yolonda Richardson, president and chief executive of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy and research organization." do a study on how many people use vapes and the Nicotine pouches and how much, if any, was their use increased during the same period?

I'm I'm CA. About a month ago I bought a pack of marlboro lights for a buddy that helped me move some things. The pack was $13.50. I was genuinely shocked.

Damn. That’s $130.50 per carton. Someone who smokes a Caron per week is paying well over $500 a month in nothing but cigarettes. Over a year they’ll spend over $6,200 on them. That’s enough to pay for a rather nice vacation.

I dabbled with cigarettes here and there. Never was a full time or every day smoker. I haven't touched one in a while. Probably smoke 3 or 4 cigs a year. I dipped all my life but I slowed down a lot. I'm trying to get off the dip and frick pouches.

Wish they'd tax snacks into oblivion the way they did smoking.

Too many goddamn hogs running wild.

Good. Growing up in the 80s/90s everything smelled like smoke everywhere. Banning smoking from indoor places is one of the best strides we've made as a society.

It's mind boggling to think about honestly. I remember the days of smoking or non smoking hotel rooms. We'd always get non smoking but when they'd accidentally give us a smoking room I couldn't believe the stench

Crazy people were ok living like that

The price of cigarettes is just crazy now. I quit smoking 26 years ago when a pack of cigarettes cost like $2.00 a pack. I was in a store not long ago and saw cartons of Marlboro Lights for $98.99 each! That’s just nuts.

I quit smoking in 2010 after smoking for 25 years. I used to make a yearly post about it talking about all the money I saved over the years. I imagine I’m at close to $100k in savings.

Not smoking has allowed me to travel the world (8 European countries, Australia twice, almost yearly trips to Vegas, etc. ). I was able to finally buy a house.

Smoking sucks. My best friend, who never quit, has stage 4 lung cancer, and it breaks my heart to see what he and his family are going through.

I would be just fine if smoking were banned like they did in the UK for people born after a certain year.

As much as people scream about government regulation it’s hard to pinpoint any achievement that can’t be tied to government regulation.
In 100 years life expectancy almost doubled almost solely because of regulations.

I’ve seen very few immigrants smoke, unless we are referring to men from the Middle East.

Same here. The ethnic group of immigrants I’ve always associated with smoking was Eastern Europeans, but they don’t seem to smoke as much anymore.
I don’t think I’ve ever met or seen a Haitian that smokes and i know well over 500 of them.
