NEW YORK -- The cigarette smoking rate among U.S. adults dropped to another all-time low last year, with 1 in 11 adults saying they were current smokers, according to government survey data released this week.
Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, heart disease and stroke, and it’s long been considered the leading cause of preventable death.
The preliminary findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were based on survey responses from more than 24,200 adults. In the survey, CDC officials defined current cigarette smoking as smoking at least 100 cigarettes in a lifetime and now smoking every day or some days.
In the mid-1960s, 42% of U.S. adults were smokers. The rate has been gradually dropping for decades, due to cigarette taxes, tobacco product price hikes, smoking bans, public education campaigns and changes in the social acceptability of lighting up in public.
In 2024, the percentage of current adult smokers fell below 10% for the first time. Last year, it was 9%, according to the new survey.
The use of electronic cigarettes has been inching up among adults, but has held about steady in 2025, at about 7%.
“The continued decline in smoking is a monumental public health achievement that has saved millions of lives and billions in healthcare costs,” said Yolonda Richardson, president and chief executive of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy and research organization.

Good. Growing up in the 80s/90s everything smelled like smoke everywhere. Banning smoking from indoor places is one of the best strides we've made as a society.

Not complaining. Cigarettes are pointless and smell awful.

It really is crazy to think about it now. People used to smoke inside restaurants. Just wild

The price of cigarettes is just crazy now. I quit smoking 26 years ago when a pack of cigarettes cost like $2.00 a pack. I was in a store not long ago and saw cartons of Marlboro Lights for $98.99 each! That’s just nuts.

We’re now a less civilized society.

In the 50's and 60's it was not uncommon for a doctor to have a lit cig in the examination room with you.

I never experienced smoking on flights, but I remember reading about it in Pistol Pete’s book—how he took an extended flight with smokers and struggled due to the smell.

My Dad refuses to quit. Is starting to develop COPD and needed oxygen after a recent outpatient procedure because of it. Then bitches that he has to use the oxygen. Just frustrating.

Of course it’s due to the GLPs but yes that’s going down too

In the 80s it wasn’t unusual to have the guy next to you on an airplane have a lit cig.

Judging by the smells in traffic weed smoking has replaced it.

My parents bought 2 cartons of cigarettes per week at $20 each back in the early 90s but could never buy any of the kids a new pair of shoes for school. Thanks mom and dad!

I'm I'm CA. About a month ago I bought a pack of marlboro lights for a buddy that helped me move some things. The pack was $13.50. I was genuinely shocked.
