A Detroit property contaminated with uranium and other dangerous chemicals partially collapsed into the Detroit River on Nov. 26, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has confirmed.

Located next to Historic Fort Wayne and leased by Detroit Bulk Storage, the site known as the Detroit Dock allegedly collapsed under the weight of large aggregate piles that were stored at the site during Thanksgiving weekend.

The property has been listed by the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency as a contaminated site due to its use of uranium and other dangerous chemicals during manufacturing dating to the 1940s, according to the Windsor Star, which first reported the incident.

Due to the timing of the collapse, the spill went unnoticed to many responsible state and federal environmental regulatory agencies. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials were not aware of the collapse until contacted by the Windsor Star on Wednesday.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority was also informed as it is overseeing the construction of the new Gordie Howe International Bridge nearby.

WDBA’s Mark Butler said Wednesday, “WDBA is aware of the spill of aggregate from a marine facility into the Detroit River. We are committed to the highest levels of environmental protection and are working with the appropriate authorities to investigate the matter.”

Workers were seen from Windsor’s west end with backhoes near the crumbled area, which was partially sagging and submerged underwater, the Star reported.

Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy said in a statement Thursday: "EGLE is aware that the site was previously used to process uranium and there is no evidence to suggest that there is a current radiological risk. EGLE has no reason to believe PCBs or other contaminants from the site are a hazard to the public or the environment. However, EGLE intends to continue investigating potential impacts as part of its assessment of the incident. On Friday, we expect to observe the site by boat and drone flight."

Actually in the '50s through the mid '60s it was the Working Man's Paradise -- the way Houston is thought of now

I wonder what happened to change it

No clue. Officials knew about this nine days ago and it just went public today. So a lot is still in the air.

Detroit is just a mess. This is what California would turn into without the nice weather, scenery, and Hollywood.

Detroit was the richest city in America in 1960.

It took Democrats three generations to fix that.

Burn it all down and rebuild a model modern city from the ground up.

I'm assuming the contaminants would flow into Lake Erie and on to the Mistake on the Lake. Seems like a win win.

The whole dynamics of cities has evolved over the last century. With the automobile, people now don't have to live in the center of the city, forcing the poorer to move to the outskirts of town.
I bet those here that are shitting on Detroit have probably never even been to Michigan.
There are some really nice areas of the Detroit metro area, such as Auburn Hills. Very active and thriving. There also seems to be a fairly decent middle class area in the immediate suburban areas, as well. Now, inside the city limits, it looks much more disparing, yet there have been efforts to improve that as well.

Sounds like a case of suicide. I don't blame that piece of property for throwing itself in the river to get away from Detroit.

My home office is in Ann Arbor so I spend a lot of time in Detroit.

Detroit has cleaned its act up quite a bit. If you have yet to visit the MoTown Museum and Hitsville or have yet to eat at Bert's downtown by the farmer's market then you are missing out.

There are good times to be had in Detroit. Just stay outta what's left of the bad areas .... and they are working on those.

The rust belt has issues across the board. Detroit is working to change its image and clean up some of the parts that went to shite when the automobile industry collapsed.

I'm not saying the city doesn't have its glaring flaws, but we've got plenty of worse areas down south .... so this can be a pot meet kettle thing and as Southerners we should try hard not to be hypocrites.

One thing most people don't know about Detroit is that it has strong ties to The South, stronger than any major city north of the Mason Dixon line. And they are proud of that heritage and they let it be known in a lot of restaurants and in their shows and music and even in their pro athletes which they dip heavily into the southern market on all levels to find.

Their stadiums are new palaces. They love their teams. There are some of the most beautiful suburbs in the country just outside of Detroit.

I am pulling for them to stay on the right track. They have an incredible history.

I met one of the nicest men in my life up there, by chance, by the name of Miller London and we became fast friends. When we first met he and I started talking after I had eaten there. Then he gave me the grand tour of Bert's, which was amazing. He was coming down to Charleston the next week to judge a talent show and until we went out to dinner afterwards and I got to show him around Charleston I really had no idea who he was .... but I learned that night. Duck Duck Go him. He's MoTown royalty.

Since then we have called and emailed and I always eat there when I am in town and he always lets me know when he is in SC.

When I left there one time he introduced me to two guys sitting outside who were choreographers for The Spinners, (when I first became a fan they were known as the Detroit Spinners) and he introduced me as the world's biggest Spinners fan. They had their doubts.

Next thing I know we are standing on the sidewalk singing A capella with me singing the bass Pervis Jackson and the other two singing Philippe Soul Wynn and Bobby Smith leads and them trying to teach me the dance moves as we sang several songs .... I knew every word and never missed a beat. (One of a Kind Love Affair, Games People Play and I'll Be Around). They chose the songs and just kept on singing.

They were high fiving me and hugging me afterwards and it was one of the greatest days of my life as my wife looked on with another close friend of mine and his wife.

Detroit gets a bad rap in this thread. There's a lot to love about Detroit. Go there and give it a chance some time. You'll be surprised. Nice little airport too.
