Why can't currencies ever increase in value? If we used gold would it not?
Probably not because we couldn't compete on a global level if we didn't use fiat currency.

Are you sure you know about economics?
Yes

I never said or implied anything close to that.

And when we combine that with stagnant wages what do we get?
I think we both know the answer to that, but it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that we either didn't understand inflation or advocated for a non inflationary environment, which is asinine.
bro wtf are you reading? this started from me saying work ethic sucks because the government has ruined our incentive to give up most our lives to make someone else money with consistently max inflation before it's called high and the major debasing of our dollar's value.

you said we were trading beads before 1913....

And at any rate back to the issue at hand after your tangent, thank you for proving my point in your own words.
You admit that rising inflation with stagnant wages is bad for average Joe. Know what can help fight that? Perhaps a group of workers coming together to bargain collectively? You're proving me more right the longer you go. Thanks.

But it's good for stockholders, so frick the working man.
At least slavery was honest about what it was.

I just disagree because artificially raising the price of labor isn't good, IMO, but more than that unions have become bloated bearicsratic organizations that don't work. They don't give a shite about the average Joe more than the government does.

They do, it's called deflation. Historical Examples

Congress authorized the creation of the US Mint in 1792. 16 years after the Declaration of Independence and 4 years after the Constitution was ratified. So there were a few years before the US had its own national currency.

I said 100 years before 1913 we were trading beads. We were definitely dealing with Indian relations at that time and they didn't want Us currency as payment (if we weren't just taking shite from them, but that's a different story)

Im not 100% sure on this, but want the US dealing in French currency for a while before being recognized by the world as a legitimate country?
I could have that mixed up.

Who says it's artificial? The beads were real to the Indians right? The workers have value because they say they have value. How's that artificial?

Feel free to actually answer my original point whenever you feel like it
That inflation has gone up? Yes, it has, it's supposed to. Target inflation is around 1-2%. Deflation or stagnant inflation is terrible for an economy. It means the value of your goods and services are decreasing in value and usually is accompanied by a terrible economic climate. Small inflation is a good thing, and in fact, many economist say deflation is worse than a period of high inflation. Is that what you were asking?
If you knew what you were talking about you'd know that deflation is only bad in our economy because we live in a debt society. Deflation is only bad because it would increase the real value of our debt we allowed ourselves and government to rack up

By saying that you are inferring that we only traded in beads. That was probably the least traded currency and had zero impact on the economy.

but we did in 1813 huh?

The real problem is people can't afford to just quit if they think they are getting under paid lol. Most real American's who aren't on tiger dropping pretending to be rich and successful anyway. How else would you raise wages if not "artificially". Union leaders should not be paid and should not be able to fund lobbying in my opinion. Would help focus their attention on getting better wages for everyone in the union and put them on the same level as the people the represent.

I'd go further. I don't think any kind of lobbying should be fundable by anyone.

Sounds good to me. The problem is that when people get to the top they usually are corrupted or eventually end up that way. Be it union or corporate. I don't get this idea that if we just removed all checks and balances for business, we'd all of a sudden have some utopia where everyone gets paid a fair wage. People in here brag that unions are declining and if that's true then why are things getting worse, not better? Got to have balance.

agreed, remember 30-40 years ago how it was distasteful in the USA to lobby

same reason people believe trickle down economics works. Hard to factor in human choice in an equation but if I had to I'd forsure assume the worst, aka whats best for the people deciding what to do with that extra money, not the best

We have an entire industry dedicated largely to buying politicians and promoting special interests that run counter to public interest.
