With no air traffic controllers to guide the planes, what could go wrong?

I think UPS uses their own controllers
That’s not how it works

Looks like a pretty heavy commercial/industrial area.

Louisville Airport is not in a good area, just south of UL and lots of industrial places around and a Ford Plant/GE plant

They are closing air space because many ATCs are having to work temporary jobs and calling out.

What the hell, they tried to climb with an engine ablaze?
What would you want them to do, hit the brakes?
It clearly happened during takeoff

You basically have the airport right next to I-65, UofL, one of two major Ford plants, CSX shipyards, all in that general area.
The residential is close but since they built UPS Worldport there's a decent barrier around it and doesn't look like it went into any of the residential over there.

UPS plane crashes in Louisville?
Can definitely remove the question mark from the thread title.

Waiting for a dumbass Dem to blame Trump for this.
Or a dumbass Republican to blame Schumer and the Senate Dems.

Just got an update that they're extending the shelter in place:

Update: The shelter in place has been revised. New shelter in place from the Airport - northbound to the Ohio River. Avoid smoke from the incident - Louisville Metro Government

I just checked flight aware. News helicopters keep circling an area just south of the airport and west of I-65.

The fire looked fully involved at the start of that video, implying it would have been noticeable for a long time before.
I'd guess the pilots aren't looking at the engine during takeoff but surely that's what the tower is for.
Just looks like something was missed here.

Once you hit the point of no return (V1, rotate) it's pretty much try to take off with one engine or crash and die anyway.
Of course we don't know when the engine caught on fire or what they did at that moment so it's possible someone screwed up.
