re: Updated v.3.16 - Will Cover's 2018 buying guide to purchasing a new vehicle

So the truck I want is a little unusual so most dealers say I would have to order it. However they say they cant use rebates because they can only use the rebates that are offered at the time of delivery. Is this true and is there anyway to get the price down if ordering a vehicle? Tia

Why create so much hassle for the dealer? Most of us have your best interest in mind and we have our own kids to feed and don’t have time to fight with you wiseguys that want the “internet deal”
I’d like to see the internet try to do a free complimentary oil change or give you a ham at Christmas

I love buying vehicles.
Buyer has the power.
Know what you want and what you’ll give.
The won’t do it? Walk.
I’ve done it countless times.
I love seeing the sales guy come running out store after me ... happened this summer when I bought another truck.
I said nope... not what I offered.
You make them feel really stupid.. I’ll give you this or I’m going here to get it.
Let them decide.

Yeah like the guys at Eddie Tourelle Nissan in Covington who sold a wrecked car as a new car to someone I know.
I know there are good guys in the car game but most of them will break a dick off in your arse if given half a chance to make a extra buck. Nothing wrong a salesman trying to get the best deal he can for his sale. but don't fault the customer for doing the same.

Yes.

Just pit three dealers against each other.

Used this method when i bought my last vehicle. It was a 2 year old Yukon XL. It was priced below what I determined to be the average price for vehicles with a similar age, trim, and mileage. By just not saying anything but "no", and "that's not good enough" I was able to get another 1800 off, 5 free oil changes, and some floor mats.

Business trucks to haul light stuff around I like the Chevy Colorado crew cab.
I bought 10 of them this June and got them for $19,750. White, 4cylinder, 2 door with small rear cab, automatic, and power windows and locks. Employees like the ride over the Nissan frontiers I use to buy.
I sold my last group of 2016 Chevy Colorado’s similar package for $14k.
I had a guy buy them all no questions asked to resale on his car lot with cash in hand.

Step 1 is utterly ridiculous.
A) Why would you let your DL out of your sight, even if the dealer needs to make a copy of it before allowing a test drive, fine make a copy while I stand here and then hand it right back to me
B) Auto dealers carry their own insurance that covers their vehicles during test drives because obviously just because you have auto insurance doesn't mean it has good enough coverage to replace that Honda Civic if you total it during a test drive, auto dealers make sure their insurance will , so they don't even need a copy of your insurance card, they don't care. They ust have to assure you are a licenses driver else their insurance will not pay if something happens while you are driving.

quote:. This will be my next purchase most likely. Currently have a 2011 Silverado. Had it in the shop awhile back and they gave me a Colorado z71 LT loaner for the day. That thing drives like a dream and has a lot more power than you would expect with the V6. Just can’t see a reason to buy another full size truck. The size of the 2019’s is crazy. They dwarf my 2011 model. My 2011 Silverado is not much bigger than the Colorado.

the only warranty add-on I got on my new truck last year was for the tires - for an extra $10 a month on the note. Those BF Goodrich KO2s run over $200 a piece installed and I work in construction. Over the last 18 months, all four tires had to be replaced for roofing nails and sheet metal screws.
I pull up to Price Leblanc and actually enjoy watching the service rep's face when they quote the price for a new tire, and then it's, "Oh...I see you have a tire warranty. And you've been here twice already this year...oookay. There's no charge, just sign here."

I did this. Walked in to Price Leblanc with Covington and Kenner dealer sheets in hand. PL caved after about 2 hours of back & forth.

$10 a month, all four tires, no limit per year. Had the truck approx 18 months now. The first 9 months I had to replace three tires due to nails and screws. The fourth was replaced recently when I ran over a covered up culvert & the edges shredded a tire.
ETA: you bet your arse I didn't tell them that I'm on construction sites 4-5 days a week when they said it was only $10 a month extra on the note. I was thinking, sheeeiiit yall gonna lose money!

Paid $2100 (about a 6.5% discount, and then the $1500 rebate) under factory invoice on a new truck using this method. Not the absolute lowest I could've gotten but I was happy with the service and features that were thrown in. One thing I'd add is that once you get the lowest price a dealership "says" they'll offer, call every dealership within a few hours of you with a comparable package and tell them what the first dealership offered, fudging the numbers a little bit. It saved me money just by saying "well x has the same exact truck and they offered me y, so you have to beat that."

if I am doing a loan I get preathorized and after I do a test drive I write the amount I am willing to pay on my business card and tell them call me if that’s acceptable and walk out.
I already know what the car costs and what their profit margins are. New that is.

But in terms of actually building wealth, leasing is not a good option. Having any kind of note that goes to a depreciating "asset" is not a smart financial move. However, one must weigh what is really important to them, how much enjoyment they are going to get out of it right now vs. delaying pleasure.
But couldn't you say that about renting an apartment or home you dont own?
You also still have the option to buy back.
Edit: I see I already posted in this old arse thread .

im looking to purchase a used 2018 tahoe possibly... I am looking on autotrader. Every single one references KBB fair market range...
However when you put the details of the car in KBB, and you reference the trade in pricing... its freaking much lower than fair market range pricing
Can i use the KBB trade in value of the same specs when negotiating the price?

Always, always, always buy a vehicle on the last day of the month or the qtr. if a dealer is close to making their quota they will actually lose money on a deal, in order to make the incentive.
