I wonder if they're starting to regret sinking that barge with heavy rain coming and the river not as high as anticipated.
Edit: Just to clarify, this was not meant as a criticism of that decision. They absolutely made the right call based on what was known at the time.

that was one of the worries they had, but the backwater has dropped quite a bit since they started sinking the barge, so it would have to rain a lot to make them worried about anything.

its rolling pretty good from BR to Nola. almost looks like white water rapids in some areas
Imagine if there were no bends in the river to slow it down. The Atchafalaya River is mostly straight. If it ever takes that route during water this high, it’s going to change maps.

I never realized until now that before the 15th century, there was no Atchafalaya River. The Red River simply flowed all the way to the Gulf and never connected to the Mississippi. Until the Mississippi decided to take a turn. This graphic shows how Old River came to be.

Isn't this great for soil fertility in the areas that we intentionally flood?

What really got the ball rolling was Henry Miller Shreve clearing out the Red River logjam. It sent more water down the Atchafalaya, widening and increasing the gradient, and allowing more water to come in from the Mississippi. A positive feedback loop, if you will. I have read that in the early 1800s the Atchafalaya at Simmesport could be waded across.

Stupid question, but is that barge really expected to stop the bayou from backing up? If it goes out of its banks, won't the barge be irrelevant?

Rivers are equal parts powerful and finicky. The slightest weakness in a river bank is ultimately what causes the bends.

Sure, but it would take an all time record on the Atchafalaya to overtop the barge dam. It is very effective for all practical purposes.

Crossed it today and the water is ripping fast, twice as fast as the Mississippi River.

Amazes me that the barge can be effective. Seems like the water would go around it.

There’s levees and higher ground around it to the north and the south.
They do block off Tabors bayou which is south/east of the barge to protect Gibson.
There’s also the Morgan City locks to the North.
