My buddy had a similar problem with a guy he paid to build shelving/cabinets & an entertainment center in his house. He finally got the money back from the guy but I think he ended up getting the a police or a lawyer involved.
If you have the facebook conversation saved, at least you have records of your discussion.
I would message them on facebook and tell him you're contacting the police if he doesn't get you your money back.

You're getting beat up pretty bad on here.
Many of us have been through this in one form or another.
Don't tap dance around with the guy. If he's sick, he should be in communications with you. Check our legal with your local district attorney.
There's an old saying: Too soon old, too late smart.
Don't beat yourself up. You may have to pay the stupid tax, but don't do it twice.

Along with a contract. In writing.
Absolutely.
It's a problem for building materials stores as well.
You can have a customer order some ridiculous crap, then it arrives and they don't want it. Now you're stuck with a tiny deposit and expensive custom doors or windows you can't sell.

Contractor misapplication of Funds is a felony in Louisiana.
does it matter if he’s in MS and i’m in LA?
I don't personally know the answer, but hopefully you don't get the "that is not in our jurisdiction" from both sides run around.

I could make a killing in construction just by being professional, answering the phone, and showing up.
Why do construction baws have a hard time with this?

You can take the Karen route and light them up on social media. If they’re conducting business through Facebook messenger then I’m sure they would fear a blow to their credibility and presence online. Go for a Picayune small business page or something like that.
If he is screwing your, then he has no reason to talk to you at all. He got the money and he’s gone. But if you start jeopardizing his future income then he’ll have to remedy the situation.
It may be a coward’s route but it will work.
