Don't fall for the bullshite of "proper" diet and exercise keeps heart attacks away

....huh? What kind of bro science is this? Diet and exercise absolutely help to prevent heart disease.

There is an undeniable mountain of evidence that says obesity is directly correlated to heart disease.

Heart attacks don't target only the obese, that is true, but being obese hugely increases your chances. Therefore, being not obese hugely decreases your chances.

Even if you are genetically predisposed to heart disease, being in shape will still help vs not. If your dang 'ol grandparents are the cause of unavoidable plaque buildup in your arteries, so be it, but being obese and out of shape will still add more unnecessary plaque buildup.

Thanks to a fireman I am alive and kicking today. I was coaching a youth baseball game and blamed my indigestion on the pizza from the night befort.

A fireman came up to me in the dugout and insisted I let him take me to the hospital. He said he was sure i was having a heart attack after watching me leaning forward and holding my chest so frequently.

I told him no but ten seconds later I felt like a piece of hot iron was in my throat. I told the fireman they could put me in the psych ward if this pain would got away. He took me to the emergency room and after ecg a cardiologist met me in the operating room and did his thing. Later I wrote a letter to the paper and credited the fireman by name for saving my life.

You guys are the greatest.

Glad you are still here

Keep us posted

Maybe getting the wake up call now was better, even tho it sucked. Your organs do not get better with age so the sooner you keep them healthy the more you slow down what will happen as you age.

We all find out own pace and place but some things that might be on your radar as you heal.

Seems intermittent fasting is good for your heart but bad if you have sugar issues

I love real Southern food but not much is good for you as you age

My primary "lifestyle" (not a diet, what you do now will be for the rest of your life) is no more restaurant food (over salted and over sugared) or processed food from the grocery.

I miss fried foods but you adjust. Fortunately I can eat catfish 24 / 7 / 365 so that is my primary protein now, followed by local lamb and local goat.

I still consume lots of breakfast food (porkbelly instead of bacon) (local farm eggs not grocery) (stone ground grits, not instant) (fresh fruit instead of bread) so I have not changed the food, just the source.

If you smoke or drink, you are probably done with that.

Biggest thing is the mental side. I do not go to the gym but I garden. Get rid of "drama" friends & family and focus on calm. Make sure you are laughing at something daily. tell folks you love now, it is too late when you are dead.

2 things to think about

#1 Make sure you have an advocate when dealing with modern health care

#2 Make sure you have the best heart person you can but also make sure they have good staff. Long term support staff (like nurse and pharmacist) will get most of your work done.

I will be sure to discuss this with my cardiologist certainly a concern I have. One of the medications they have me on is to combat plaque buildup where their located. I appreciate the heads-up

I had one last year very similar to you. I got two stents as well. Afterwards they put me on a statin, Brillinta and a baby aspirin a day. My cholesterol was in the acceptable range before but now they want it crazy low. I was on Brillinta for 1 year. It is a blood thinner that is supposed to keep your blood from clotting on the stent and attacking it. You don't want that to happen. I am off it now and have been doing great. The biggest downside is that I bruised if the wind blew. It was ridiculous. I am now at the point where I see the cardiologist every six months. All in all, it wasn't as bad is it could have been.

BTW, when it happened I was 57yo 5'11" 175.
Now I am down to 159. Working my way to 155.

First year was nerve-wracking. I have changed diet but still eat some things I shouldnt from time to time. I try not to get into road rage incidents or get worked up over trivial crap. Just take it easy and look out for yourself.

Should I call you "stone ground cheese grits :) Thanks I appreciate the info. I think I'm a little like you when it comes to eating referring to your catfish comment. I can eat the same thing every day no worries. keeping things calm is a mandate I made years ago and telling those I love them comes naturally telling others how I feel comes naturally as well. My wife has been in the oral surgery business for a lifetime which makes things super easy when dealing with health care and insurance issues. I'm more than fortunate. We may shop cardiologist although my Dr luck of the draw is top notch his office staff is not. Follow up first then I'll make some decisions.

They have me on the same medications as you mentioned. Reading your post makes me feel like I will write something very similar a year from now. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I appreciate it.

Lucky guy. Kudos to your spouse for being so giving to you. You are very fortunate.

I punched your details into a calculator and your BMI is >30 which is obese level. Doc will probably tell you to lose weight.

Start by trying to achieve a 500 cal/day deficit to get that weight down. Get a good step tracker and track your meal calories too. No more seconds. I found the Fitbit watch to be better than the iPhone at that because I can enter meals and track steps together.
