Sorry to hear that. What were your stats like in general before (e.g., weight, exercise routine, diet)?

Sometimes it's more genetics than the above. In the last couple of years I've lost a friend and family member to sudden cardiac arrest. One was 59, the other 68. Both healthy outdoorsmen who had few if any medical problems, were in good outdoorsman shape and both dropped dead in the snap of a finger. Both had male relatives that died early of heart attacks.

Not trying to be a dick but stop telling us how great in shape you used to be and blaming your marriage. You had a heart attack because you became fat and lazy. Not because you got married.

Wow, glad it worked out for you to get back home versus 6 feet under. Listen to your Doc, not the OT lol. But, keep fishing, it’s good for the soul for sure…

My dad lived through the widow maker. If I were not at his house when it happened he would be dead. That was about 15 year ago. He is 75 now. He hasn't missed a beat. They put a stint in him then and another one a few years later. He became a good patient after the second stint. His pipes have always checked out since. He takes a baby aspirin every day and takes his statin every day. As for diet all he did was switch to canola oil for his fried fish and browns meat with extra light olive oil. The only exercise he gets is in the fall walking the woods hunting. He is in way better health than most of the guys his age.

My family has a genetic issue that was brought to light by his event. We have to take statins to decrease inflammation thus decreasing the possibly of plaque build up in our arteries. The statins stabilize our cholesterol numbers as well, but that is not how they save you from buildup. No amount of exercise or eating cardboard can save us from a heart attack. My mother had glowing cholesterol numbers and still had a severe blockage that they caught before she had a heart attack. My hard headed in shape uncle refused to check him self out because he had "proper diet" and ended up with a quadruple bypass.

Don't fall for the bullshite of "proper" diet and exercise keeps heart attacks away. Marathon runners have dropped dead from massive heart attacks due to this lie. I got put on statin before I was 30. I even went through a stress test before 40. All good. Not saying eating well and exercise are not needed to be heathy. Just saying don't ignore your heart because you are fit and eat a low fat diet.

Sure, genetics plays a role.

I don't know what these mean though. If the general public's view on obesity, etc., is any indication, they likely were obese and not in general good shape. I'm not saying that this is the case, just playing the odds.

You see it on this board all the time. Some baw says that he's 5'9" and 240 lbs., knows that he needs to lose "a little weight", but he was on the JV team in high school and used to lift weights.

Well you succeeded in being a dick when you didn't try look at you overachieving and stuff. My wife actually blamed herself so there you go. That isn't to say she isn't the very best thing that happened to me but I feel I have to say that because you seem to be a buffoon. In plain English go frick yourself!

No one says that it will keep them away, but it's not bullshite that it will decrease your odds.

Yeah, long distance running over the long term puts stress on your body.

Did you take the Covid shots? A lot of young people are having unexplained heart conditions that may be connected to Covid.

You are going to want to weight train. 3-4 days a week. Ideally do some cardio after, walking on the treadmill, stairmaster, etc.

Purchase a food scale if you don’t have one. Weigh and track everything you put in your mouth for a week or 2. Most people have no idea what portion sizes are. They see two table spoons of peanut butter on the back of the jar but ignore the grams part. The two tablespoons they dig out are really 4-6 tablespoons. There went 30% of the days calories

Avoid fried foods. Incorporate healthy fats like eggs and avocados. Avoid sugar, limit sodium intake.
If you drink, you need to cut back. If you smoke or use tobacco products, that needs to stop asap.

You are 55. You still have time to make changes before its too late.

Glad you lived. I'm 35 and terrified of this. I've been fat for 5 years or so now, and high blood enough blood pressure my GP put me on blood pressure meds. I'm embarrassed it got to this point, but walking at least a mile or two every day and working out consistently. I hope I didn't frick myself for the future.

I use to be that guy until I turned 40. I was 6’0 and weighed about 220. Down to 195 now. I always lifted but in kind of a half arse lazy way. Had a VO2(?) done and was below average for my age. Did research on it and saw how important it was to health. Just read a book called Outlive and it was eye opening. I’m not concerned with dying I just want to be able to live as healthy as I can up until I die. So I run, jog, walk, lift, bicycle, swim, change it up from day to day.

Eta: Probably still overweight but I feel good at 195

So, was it just a pain in your back that prompted you to go to the ER? I swear I have all sorts of twitches, sharp pains, etc that come and go and I wouldn't know when to pull the trigger again. I'm early 50's in good shape.
Yes just pain in my back I though I aggravated an injury I live with every day from holding my grandson on my shoulders while we watched his big brother in an allstar game. My triceps were tender I thought from throwing him over my head as well. I just couldn't get comfortable so I called my friend in the FD for some info and then it was on.

I've had employer mandated annual stress tests for years. I've almost always failed them. I was told by a cardiologist when I was in my 20s that I had a irregular (I forget the word he used) heartbeat but it was nothing to worry about. Fast forward to these failed stress tests. Finally the cardiologist reading the results refused to clear me for work until I got a followup. My PCP called me in and said the stress test indicated I had or was headed for the widow maker. So I had a heart cath. One artery had 10% blockage, the others were squeaky clean. He gave me a clean bill of health and laughed at the idea of me getting an annual stress test, said I didn't need it. I've never experienced any symptoms and have no family history. I'm also 62 and an OT fatty. It's more genetics than anything else. I am more conscientious than I used to be but I'm far more worried about alzheimers than I am a cardiac event.
