For my company, it was because residential customers kept ordering jobs and then bailing on us after we had already produced custom materials. We now require a 50% deposit on all residential jobs.
shite I just did a kitchen remodel earlier this year and found that every countertop company we got quotes from wanted full payment up front....that floored me but the company I went with told me that they were getting stuck with a bunch of stone that took a long time to sell with a bunch of folks backing out on jobs.

We can't even sell most of ours if someone backs out. I'm in glass fabrication and 99% of our glass is custom cut to very exact dimensions. It becomes garbage if someone backs out.

Make up a fake facebook account and contact them again like you are a new customer and see if he answers you.

does it matter if he’s in MS and i’m in LA?
No, not if the deal was to take place in Louisiana. What they will do is issue a warrant, contact a local sheriff in his town and have them knock on the door a few times. After that, he will get picked up from a traffic stop or other run-in with the police.

I'd just provide the company name and number and allow the OT to feast

Former commercial millwork and theming estimator. If it was a natural stone, I can understand them asking for 50% deposit on commercial jobs and 100% on residential. The cost of the stone is much more than the labor to cut and install. Hell, we had to buy a natural quartzite that was 230 sf after their labor cost to and they put minimal profit on that bar top and cladding to get the job.

Consider it a cheap life lesson and move on.
People suck, good luck.

I could make a killing in construction just by being professional, answering the phone, and showing up.
Why do construction baws have a hard time with this?
I self-contracted our renovation a few years ago and seriously thought about quitting and becoming a residential GC...or finding a trade to manage.
The issue is similar across other industries. They are trained and have the skills in construction. Not in business operations, HR, software management, contracts, etc. There's physician-owned & managed practices across the country that are just as poorly run, but are masked by higher costs/reimbursements and some general framework that supports them.

Use a friend's phone, ask him to come pick up the deposit check, and bingo.
If he doesn't show, then he is sick, and that is unfortunate. If he does show, get your money back, or let him know you will sue.
Unrelated but my mom left her phone in a store once and the person who found said he would give it back for a fee ($50). So my dad met him at the mall, and when the guy demanded the money, the cop that came with my dad got the phone back quickly. The guy had switched the battery (idk why). Some people just flat out suck as humans.

Call Richard Shorts.
If you can't come to him, he'll come to you.
One call, That's all.
Richard got me my check.

Lesson #1 never pay a contractor for anything until he puts it in your property or does work on your property and shows you where he has paid for his materials in full,
Lesson #2 never let a contractor work on your property until you get a certificate of insurance.
Lesson #3 never let a contractor get ahead on you and alwsyd retain enough of his money to make him come back and do any punch list work.
Lesson #4 make sure your contractor has taken out all applicable permits and has had all inspections made and approved.
