It's a pretty common tactic to put pressure on the parents and keep them from resting on their laurels.
In this situation, where you believe someone is helping a fugitive - you basically want to keep their stress level at a maximum and let them know that you'll be there until there's a resolution, period. You want to keep them thinking you're always there looking, always there over their shoulders, always digging into new things and chasing every possibility.
A comfortable accomplice doesn't crack, one that has their life upended and can't find peace does. They're tightening the screws on his family to see if one of them eventually tires of the constant intrusion and breaks.
That's just my guess, as someone witb relevant experience in manhunts. Going back to collect any belongings at this point only makes sense (to me from the outside) if they're trying to keep the Laundrie family under their thumb
