I'm not saying this guy is a genius but cutting the floor out of the tent and digging her grave there would give him a lot of cover on that road. People tend to leave early and come back late at those dispersed camps and nobody would have bothered them if they were out on the riverbed camping.

This is my fault because the whole shovel thing is pretty irrelevant now. I think I just assumed incorrectly that she was buried and then we took off on a tangent.
