It makes no sense. Too many hours of driving if he was the person who got the car back to Florida.
Which would imply either someone else drove the van or someone is mistaken (or lying) about where he was.
As already discussed, better information is probably available to law enforcement if they looked. Cell phone records, credit card receipts, traffic cameras, gas station or restaurant cameras would be better evidence about who was where and when
