If he can plead it down to manslaughter, I think he could easily serve less than 5 years with a clean record.

Why does everybody think garret did it? Could be the wrong place at the wrong time. He doesn't fit the profile of a criminal

Well one of the posters in this thread who spent several years as a prosecutor in Orleans Parish feels that he will serve much longer.

No, not really. Police don't approach a situation where someone is beat to hell as one in which they have to determine if the perpetrator, who fled to a parking garage to hide and isn't injured, as if they have to determine if the perp acted in self defense.

quote:well he has a better perspective than I do. A defendant without a record, that made a terrible decision while impaired can sometimes get some leniency in a sentence. Maybe something like a 20 split 5.

Do they do split sentences in La.?

Slackster, and tgrbait, are the ones that actually let their preconceived bias about race come out, as they are speaking down to others claiming they are
You think race plays "an immaterial part" in why people are more willing to believe that Ward must have been provoked. I think that's naïve, at best.

ETA: I respect your opinions more than anyone, but damnit you are too slow and are a couple post behind my questions

so this is what you are saying is happening if the family is telling the truth:
Family hears from a "witness" that Red was intervening to stop Ward from beating a woman. That witness may or may not have spoken to the NOPD, we don't know.
NOPD may have someone who says Ward was in a heated argument with a woman prior to attacking Red. NOPD detective tells this to Red's ex, who likely believes this corroborates the story she heard form the convenience store employee(s).
NOPD may not believe Red was trying to intervene, but simply in the wrong place at the wrong time as Ward was hot from the argument with the woman. Ward flips out on Red and kills him.
That's entirely plausible and would make sense within the "official" reports we've heard and give the basis for the rumors his family has retold.

Consider (if the "facts" are generally true) the full sentence is life without parole even 20 years (for a 25yo) is fairly lenient, no?

Unless something changes, Ward deserves some serious time
