So far not even a peep from the Coast Guard directly. Just bits and pieces passed on to the local media to feed them something.
They held a press conference yesterday.
What do you want them to say? They are in search and rescue/recovery mode right now.....the investigation will take weeks/months.

Speaking of which, who runs lead on these type investigations?

Not sure...depends if they suspect anything criminal...Coast Guard should be lead but, NTSB will get involved as well as homeland security

The NTSB has specific authority under the United States Code and Code of Federal Regulations to investigate “major marine casualties.” These are accidents involving vessels that result in one or more of the following:
The loss of six or more lives.
The loss of a mechanically propelled vessel of 100 or more gross tons.
Property damage initially estimated as $500,000 or more.
Serious threat, as determined by the USCG commandant and concurred with by the NTSB chairman, to life, property, or the environment by hazardous materials.

Still searching for 12 missing
Weather service met called it a derecho
2 things, I thought we were down to 9-10 only missing? One of those reports is wrong I guess? Bummer
Lastly, if this is truly listed as a derecho that's going to throw a major wrench into a proper investigation and liability I'd suspect.

No, but perhaps - not saying true, but perhaps - criminal negligence, if a reasonable person would have looked at weather conditions and decided to not leave port.

It has to meet very strict parameters to be considered a derecho. I don't know if it will.

No....if they suspect if drugs or alcohol played a role into decision making.....if the capt was forced to sail, if the capt was negligent......there are things they will investigate and rule everything out until they figure out what exactly happened.....
and you better believe Lloyds will do their own investigations

UPDATE:
Spencer Gremillion (I think FB Post). My daughter texted this over:
Update: As of 12 PM on April 15th, per US Coast Guard, dive boats, coast guard cutters and other resuce operations are on location of the boat. The dive team has still yet to get close enough to set up and get into the capsized boat. They say their efforts to get in should happen very soon with the weather calming. Continue to pray!

The biggest catching point being if that wake low had been forecast and warned prior to them leaving port. An earlier post read and seemed like it had.

Criminal as in they will be looking into the following
Captain licensing
Captain negligence
Company or hiring company forcing them to go out

Hope we get some good news today.

Right. It doesn't seem like the warnings issued earlier in the day specifically mentioned weather THAT bad. However, the certainly mentioned the potential for really bad weather, and mentioned perhaps staying in port or donning life jackets.
The more I think about it, these lift boats aren't very nimble or navigable. I'm kinda surprised these situations don't happen more often.

Coast Guard has come to speak with us, they are diving NOW! They are doing everything within power to get to boat. He did confirm that the pic below was from Tuesday night about 8:00pm that what looks to be is 2 guys in the hull with movement. The divers are working on efforts to get to that hull and they also as we pray could be more air pockets that are just not in this picture. They was able to get to the piece that is sticking out and hit on it with hammer to see if they could hear anything. They had to back off quickly again because of the weather.
8–10 divers are in at a time now and they said it could take up to 4 days to clear the boat with today being day 1. Donjon are the divers Seacore has contracted, as Coast Guard sweaps the waters. "
From facebook. Spencer is the old buddy of mine I was referencing earlier. He's down there and very close with the families as you can tell by his tags.

What part of the "hull" are they in do we know? Is that the portion sticking out of water? Or are the under water? I'm confused when they say they "saw them", did they mean with an infrared camera?
The crew quarters section of the boat where men would most likely be located is considerably under water right now correct?

I remember as a kid in the early 70's . My dad would always talk about lift boat accidents. He worked on a casing crew back then. That was when plenty of the lift boats were tiny and some had wooden poles for legs. Oilfield is way safer now than back then.
