They are horrible. Took nearly a year to get our roof done. We will be switching instead of renewing.

I understand that, but I’m trying to highlight the fact that you either have coverage, or you don’t. It’s typically straightforward, but people don’t ask the right questions and don’t read their policies.

Wafer this is exactly the crookedness that drives people crazy. We experienced a named storm. A storm that created millions of dollars worth of damage across south louisiana. My neighbor’s vent blew off and rain came through his roof and he’s covered. I get hosed because the same storm rain came through my door and this semantics says I’m not covered? It’s a storm. I pay insurance in case damages occur. They did, and now they want to not pay it. There’s nothing shady going on expect for them redefining what constitutes wind driven rain and how it gets into your home.

The frick its not.. It's storm damage plain and simple Unless It was specifically excluded from your policy. It will not be covered by a flood policy, but it is a covered peril from your hazard policy. Tell them they're full of shite and if its not settled then your next step is contacting a lawyer and getting double the original claim at very least.

I have UPC and have had zero issues with claims. Got a new roof when an inspector came out due to a leak and found hail damage. They were easy to work with as well. Roofing company that I picked used to be adjusters and they said working with small/medium insurance companies such as UPC is a lot easier than the big ones. They said All State and State Farm are the absolute worst and almost never approve anything even if there is overwhelming evidence.

I am sure that they will have to cite policy language in their denial letter. It’s all in there.

Wind destroyed weather stripping

Even if The policy states wind driven rain is not covered no matter how stupid that is. Why have two different deductibles for a hurricane and a non-hurricane storm damage? The policy itself defines hurricanes differently. A hurricane is wind and rain. Wtf wouldn’t my damage be covered using my hurricane deductible? Besides like I said, the door was solid as a rock before the storm, you could take it off the hinges and pour water on it, and nothing would come through it. My point is that after hours of storm creating deficiencies in the structure of the door caused the water to get in. Tell me why that shouldn’t be covered?

After Hurricane Laura, I fought a claim with UPC for nearly a year until it was finally resolved in July. I went through 5 desk adjusters until one finally made something happen. It was infuriating, calling/emailing everyday and receiving nothing back only to hear from the higher ups weeks later (after I contacted them) that I got assigned a new adjuster. If I didn’t take the initiative and pester them everyday, nothing would’ve gotten done.

The deductibles have nothing to do with coverage, only the insured’s responsibility in the event of a loss. If the water touched the ground and entered your home, homeowners won’t cover it. If you have a named peril policy, you have to have a storm created opening that allowed water into the home to offer coverage for interior damages. If you have an all perils, HO3 policy, you have coverage for wind blown rain without a storm created opening

That’s why you always opt for the Homeowners over the dwelling/fire policy unless you absolutely cannot afford otherwise.
Posted on 9/28/21 at 9:33 pm to wickowick
Well if the storm didn’t create the opening then what the hell did? And how can the insurance company say it didn’t? We have video of the rain coming through the doors. This isn’t some scam I’m running by ruining my brand new house. It’s legitimate and with proof. And to make matters worse the amount of damage estimated to be fixed is less than 6% of the coverage policy. Frickin insurance bastards. Scammers.

A home isn’t water tight, wind can blow rain water into places it normally wouldn’t go, like through a ridge vent or space between double doors. All without actual damage to the home.
Had a lot of water blown through my ridge vents in hurricane Isaac.

I’ve been in insurance for 11 years and can tell you without a single doubt that even if the wind had blown the rain through the door, it should be covered under an HO-3 policy. In fact, I had literally the same exact situation during the hurricane - wind driven rain through the sides and bottom of my door caused the floor to be covered in water and it soaked into the drywall. USAA paid it and I have up to $2,500 of mold remediation coverage for it as well.
You 100% - no no - 1,000% need to fight your insurance company. Do not lie down to their denial tactics. Get a lawyer if you have to because you WILL win.

My declaration page says HO3.
Posted on 9/28/21 at 9:38 pm to TDsngumbo
I’m assuming he does not have a 3, or he wouldn’t be in this situation.
ETA Well then you should be covered for wind driven rain. HO3 should be open peril on the dwelling.

Did something from the storm create that hole that allowed the water through, or did the water come through crevices that were already there?

Do you not understand that wind can blow water around and through, doors, windows, vents, etc without damaging the door, window, vent, etc? Go look at your door. Do you see any storm damage to the door? Did the wind blow it in? Did debris impact it and damage it or is the door exactly the same today as before the storm?
Just saw he has an HO3 policy, if you have video of water entering the door, then you should have coverage.

UPC is Demotech, and as an insurance agency principal, I don’t allow my agents to write Demotech companies.
That being said, wind driven rain is excluded on some policies, and most insureds are not aware.
Demotech companies are notorious for bullshite. Stay away from them unless all you’re concerned with is price.

This seems like a pretty good thread to remind everyone - if your premiums are substantially lower than your neighbors and such, don’t be shocked when your coverage is lacking.
Eta- it sucks for you OP, but it’s almost certainly in black and white in the policy documents.
