Unjust laws: drinking and smoking age. Let's have an honest discussion.

(OT has better shot at this than Poli-circle jerk board does. Some of us are rational here.)
I'm not going to lay out the argument of "you can fight and die in a war for your country", or the responsibility to vote, or support yourself/get married.
Others will do that. And those are valid arguments.
Mine is the death penalty/ life without parole angle.
If we can say, with a straight face, that someone is responsible enough for their actions to be sentenced to death or life imprisonment, how can we then say they are not responsible enough to consume alcohol and tobacco?
How can we say a 15 or 16 year old is enough of an adult to be charged as one, but then say they cannot be responsible enough to decide what to do with their bodies?
We cant have it both ways and consider ourselves a fair society.
These two age limits are unjust. And we should not support this type of oppression on our society.
Now...I am willing to compromise: we can keep these safe limits, but raise the legal age to qualify for the death penalty and life without parole to 21.
Fair enough?

quote:^ That....and the fact that an 18 year old is considered mature enough to enter themselves into legally binding contracts is why 21 for smoking/drinking age makes no sense

The death penalty isn't relevant in Louisiana right now as it hasn't been used in over 10 years.

I vote to move it to 35.

When I am governor drinking age will be 18. Who needs federal funding for roads. Less roads = less drunk driving.

If life begins at conception, why did we have to wait the extra 9 months?

The way I look at it is that it's illegal to drink until you are responsible enough at 21.
It's illegal to murder at any age.
It's illegal to murder at any age.

, but raise the legal age to qualify for the death penalty and life without parole to 21.

I wasn’t any more mature at 21 than I was at 18. Probably didn’t really mature until like 2 years ago when I turned 25

But how can you say someone under 21 is responsible enough for their actions to warrant such extreme penalties, but not smoke a cigarette?

Why does a human need ~9 months of gestation....? Thats just kind of the way it is. Like the sky is blue, water is wet. Humans just take a few months to brew up. You might as well be asking reasons why a should newborn wait until its A bit more grown to drink alcohol.

I'd rather lower the drinking/smoking age than raise the death penalty age. If you can't understand why you shouldn't kill a human being at 13, IDC if you rot in hell.

Daddy government treats us all like children when they want to take something away.
We're only adults when they need something from us.

Are you kidding? We are forever children in their eyes, incapable of making any informed decisions for ourselves without their "divine" intervention.

We were allowed to drink when we were 18. But most of us were out of our parents home by 21 and were married. The Viet Nam war was ending and the average age of the soldier there was 19. Those were the days. You want to act like an adult be one.

I don’t care about the death penalty but the voting age absolutely needs to be raised to at least 25.

Do you also believe 25 should be the minimum age for conscription?
