University of Colorado Study finds no link between kids Contact Sports and Head Trauma

Heard this on 107.3 this morning and found this link about the study.
I'm a big fan of little league football and think the cases we hear about are not an indication of a larger problem, but anomalies themselves.
But I know much of the OT will not let their sons play b/c of of concussions and potential long term trauma.
Figured I'd share and see what y'all think.

Gist of article from Eureka(a science nerd journal).

Adolescents who play contact sports, including football, are no more likely to experience cognitive impairment, depression or suicidal thoughts in early adulthood than their peers, suggests a new University of Colorado Boulder study of nearly 11,000 youth followed for 14 years.

Interesting read, still iffy on letting my son play. I played football and had 3 concussions. I'm 39 now and deal with extreme forgetfulness and migraines. Not sure if connected though.

CTE is just an excuse for white people to not have their kids intermingle with the blacks

This study looks at all contact sports, not specifically football.

Do you know where I can buy a football bat? Academy and Dick’s didn’t have any

I am pretty confident that I have CTE, and did not play football. I have had 3 documented concussions, and who knows how many others, from just living life. You can't live afraid of every trendy diagnosis, or we will all be trapped in our house playing Fortnite.

My son was diagnosed with epilepsy due to Fortnite.

I've got 4 of them little shits and have always called all their sports "little league".

My son is playing football this year. I continually call it peewee around his team and his friends that play on other teams. They look at me like I am crazy.

How much did the NFL pay them for these results?

At that age, kids are resilient and there aren't the forces involved at higher levels of football that can cause catastrophic damage.

Yes. I was a propane salesmen in college to help pay the tuition. Luckily, journalism has been kind to me since graduation so I was able to ditch the propane life.

It's also interesting that children that play sports between ages 8-14 are significantly less likely (22% less likely) to show signs of depression as adults.
A healthy dose of competition and team building during developmental years goes a long way for mental health.

Wasn't this blatantly obvious? If CTE was inevitable from playing football, American society should be riddled with brain-addled zombies. I started playing in the era of suspension helmets. I don't see my generation suffering from CTE in the massive numbers the hysteria -mongers would have you believe.
I can't believe the NFL ever caved in any way on this issue. They've degraded their product for no reason and now have endangered their future. Idiotic.

That study focuses on 20- mid 30 year olds. Dementia develops later in life.
quote:
Another limitation is the age at which follow-up occurred. The participants were in their late 20s to early 30s at follow-up (W4). As such, it could be possible that we did not detect any cognitive decline as a result of participation in sport because W4 participants were too young to detect it and the development of cognitive decline and/or depression had yet to emerge.
