Everyone laughed at Larry Fedora for wanted data before labeling football dangerous.

What about later in life?

That study focuses on 20- mid 30 year olds. Dementia develops later in life.

That was my first reaction. It's a little short sighted to act like if you make 32, things are all good.

I'm not an advocate of getting rid of football, but having more info on the impact of contact sports to let people make informed decisions is good. I have no beef with people who want to take the risk. I did and don't regret it, but more info is good.

Everyone has to die some day. Preventing your children from playing a contact sport due to something that may or may not happen to them decades down the line is stupid. Football has always been violent.

Interesting read, still iffy on letting my son play. I played football and had 3 concussions.

I would say you sound like a typical mom these days. But you said you played football. So, I am confused.

Let the freaking kid play if he wants. Or just put him in bubble wrap. I get wanting to protect your kids. But do some homework and have common sense, man. CTE from football, like global warming, is all a lie.

My son has been playing football since age 5, one year of flag and tackle ever since.

He's the QB on his 7th grade team and loves it, actually he's obsessed with it and would be pissed if I didn't let him play.

It also keeps him focused in school (no pass no play).

The other day I was riding my bike (with no helmet of course) by Catholic High's football field.

There was a pee wee game being played while I rode by. The first play I noticed was an out route to the wr. CB was playing tight man coverage, jumped the route and took it to the house! 55 yard pick 6.

It was glorious to watch. Coach O needs to lock this dude up for DBU!

I let my boy play in 7th grade this year too. He loved it, and he was an exceptional QB/RB out there. Took a few rough tackles and ended up only making it through 5 games. Broke the growth plate in his arm and separated his shoulder and AC joint. He was a little upset that the tackle occurred so far out of bounds, but he got over it. He got knocked silly once...they gave him a field sobriety looking test and he went back in the second half.

He even got to attempt a field goal this year too. Barely missed from 38yds, but he had plenty of distance.

There are some fun things to see. There is a lot of bad looking football, but then every now and then they do something that makes you raise your eyebrows and look around.

My son played from 2nd to 8th grade. He finally quit when he got to a big HS and he's still kinda small. Those were some fun years watching him play and he enjoyed it. Now he's leaning towards just basketball.

I haven't seen any issues from the years of contact except he can be a complete fricking retard sometimes.

My boy’s skinny, but he’s damn near 6’ tall.

Hopefully he gets cleared to play soccer next Friday, he’s going to be heart broken if he has to miss games. Also has US national team tryouts the day after his Ortho check up.

He’s talking about wanting to start pitching, but he’s never played baseball. Not sure he can do it all, but he wants to.

11K subjects for 14 years seems like a rigorous longitudinal study, but what about later adulthood? Also, the group in question is categorized as those who "intended" on playing contacts sports. Did they actually play football or any contact sport? Soccer, water polo, and quidditch (lol) are considered contact sports.

Heading the ball in soccer is now prohibited until a kid is 13 years old. I think that is ridiculous.

Wild, I didn't know that. My 5yo has caught a few elbows and errant kicks to the head already. I don't see how heading the ball could be any worse.

Your 5 yr old play U8 soccer? That’s where the leagues, rec, start here. Clubs do Academy ball, but that’s still U10.

Man, I'm not at all certain a sample can even begin to figure it out at that age

But hey, we Gen-X'ers turned out fine and still kick much arse. Bang on, boys. Bang on.
