went all over. East 6th, west 6th, congress, rainey. The people in town were friendly, just more than your typical bad service.

If you're not slowing anyone down or acting like an idiot I've found people in NYC, Boston, DC, etc. to be anywhere from neutral to cordial/welcoming. As others imply, it's more about "knowing how things work" than hostility for the hell of it.
NYC was kind of weird, if you tried to be nice and pleasant then you were treated like shite or ignored, but if you were pleasant with the right amount of forcefulness in your voice they would gladly engage you in conversation or help you.

You think? I hear this about a lot of classic, Southern cities (Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Franklin, Chattanooga) ... I don't think it comes off as unfriendly. People are just skeptical or curious at first. These are smaller, older "established" towns where everyone knows everyone who grew up there.
I just think Savannah is one of the most cliquish cities in the country. From what I hear, you better have money when you move there because they will treat you as an outsider if you don’t.

One of the first things I noticed when I moved here from Baton Rouge years ago. If you walk up to the counter at Burger King, McDonalds, etc., you're likely to be greeted with a smile and "can I help you" versus being treated like you're an inconvenience and they're doing you a favor by taking your order.

Wherever I am. People should leave me the hell alone.

New York's not a place for the meek. Nice and pleasant doesn't get it.. that's a sign of weakness.

forcefulness
that's right.. and it's the same in Baton Rouge or anywhere.. if you look at the ground when you talk and step to the side and let everybody walk over you, they will.
That said, if you engage a New Yorker, tell em you're from Louisiana.. you'll find common ground. New Yorkers and Louisianans share a kind of unique bond.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are night and day different. Pittsburgh culture is sort of Midwestern. Philly is Northeastern

The Seattle Freeze is more about the perceived difficulty of making friends and breaking into new social circles and being polite but aloof. We do have plenty of angry assholes here, just pointing out that isn't what people are usually referring to when they say Seattle Freeze.
They call it the Seattle Freeze

Sometimes I feel like Southern hospitality is a myth honestly. Whenever I go up north to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the people are quite friendly.

I've met friendly people in every city I've gone

Pittsburgh is the most underrated city in the United States. Nice people, beautiful skyline, the city has a unique feel, great sports city, good nightlife. I really like the city a lot.

I've been everywhere. People who haven't really need to chill making sweeping statements based on your limited travel. Just post about an experience you had without making claims, it just shows a lack of awareness.
People posting Louisiana cities are particularly clueless. Louisiana has among the most wonderful people on the planet. It's the economy etc that have issues, the people are the best.
I'm lifetime platinum at both Hilton and Marriott, former national sales trainer that traveled to train reps and now still travel like crazy.
Anyway, the ruddiest cities are rude by culture. Those same people would different if they grew up in the south. The ruddiest entire cities are:
Philadelphia
Baltimore
--
Washington DC
Chicago
--
Denver (more personal opinion)
No, people are not rude in California. Geez some of you posters. Cali is the most laid back state. "The entire NE", yeah, I'm sure you've spent a lot of time in the stunningly beautiful villages of New Hampshire where people are excited to meet new folks. Seattle is more socially clueless than they are rude. Savannah is fine, they just want to know where people are coming from. People in Boston love to talk to strangers, it's a "hard" town but its not rude.

I live here now and have encountered nothing but a welcoming environment. I’ve lived here for almost a year and I don’t think I’ve had a single person be a jerk off to me yet. Very welcoming city. What has led you to believe this?

I’m in California once a month these days since it’s in my sales territory. It’s just been Silicon Valley where I’ve had problems. San Franciscans have been very nice to me and I was shocked by how LA treated me.

I’ve just found that that city is very distrustful and doesn’t like outsiders, even from the far reaches of Augusta. I can’t think of many towns that are like that from communities that may only be an hour from them.
