“Under promise and over deliver” or “fake it til you make it?”

I would say both have potential value depending on the circumstance, but they are both mantras that are thrown out commonly and are diametrically opposed. So which is better overall? Selling yourself as super great/talented/capable in the hopes that perception is reality or that you will grow into whatever endeavor? Or being overly humble and then being able to over deliver/pleasantly surprise?

Like most strategies, it is situationally dependant.

I am very much in the first category but everyone above me in my work department is in the second and it drives me crazy. We make outrageous promises and people get pissed when we inevitably fail. We need the business but we lose out on a lot of repeat customers. Also because I’m in the first category, my career path ceiling is very limited but I’d imagine that is in most fields. Probably why I have had trouble getting job offers, because I’m too honest.

When we had our business we would under promise on timelines and people caught on and expected stuff faster than we quoted... Well, we quoted a buffer in there for supply/shipping issues and then the regulars understood that we weren't necessarily deceiving them, just wanted to account for delays beyond our control.

I feel like this too. I gave myself an 7/10 average about a particular skill set and regretted it for 3 days. I didn’t get the job.

I say the former. The problem with fake it till you make it is that smart people will sniff you out early on.

In my interactions with females, I definitely take the "under promise/over deliver" route.

Depends on your role.
When you're starship captain you fake it til you make it but when you're the chief of engineering you need to under promise and over deliver.

Point taken, but that’s kind of subjective is it not? Being at a “high point” or “achieved point” is very dependent on the individual.

Say what you mean,
Mean what you say.
It’s really that simple

Everybody knows I’m doing good to stay awake for a 12 hour shift. When times get bad I get called upon and I usually make it happen. So I guess I’m UPOD. That’s better than faking to me. Faking gets people killed.

bullshite will get your foot in the door but after that you better have something to offer.

I wish you would have faked this thread before you made it.

I think we all “fake it til you make it” at one point or another. Most people when they start a job/career the first time aren’t 100% prepared and will hold it all together until they have it. As always though, someone will see through your shite so you should get it quick.
Under promise over deliver is great, but it’s hard to keep that going as pointed out in the thread, due to expectations.

Fake it til you're naked works, so says a friend of mine.

I prefer to baffle them with bullshite before I have to dazzle them with brilliance.

It depends on the situation. But you’re really shite out of luck when you find yourself in a position when people depend on you being exceptional and you can’t produce. I’m way too honest for my own good but I have no doubt I’d bite off more than I could chew if I wasn’t

You definitely practice the best policy with
and although, yes, it would probably depend on the situation, as a general matter, best practice is likely to know the limits of your abilities on your best day, and set expectations right about there. And again, honesty/full disclosure is the best policy.
