Surgery was L4-L5 severely ruptured/herniated disc. It's the worst sciatica pain I've ever had in my life. I'm 2 weeks post surgery and I can only walk about 2 minutes before I nearly collapse. Sitting is the only thing that doesn't hurt. Laying in bed is just terrible.
Any advice? Experience? Will it ever go away?
Could be a postoperative radiculitis from moving around and irritating the nerve roots during surgery.
How far down your leg does the pain radiate? Is this the same side that you were having pain prior to the procedure?
This kind of pain 2 weeks postoperatively could be treated with something like a Medrol Dosepak since there's no arthrodesis taking place. Call the office and see if you can be put on a round of steroids.
If it doesn't resolve after that, talk to your surgeon about a new MRI to look for any residual stenosis.

Did you have any relief following the surgery ?
There is a chance some residual disc is still in there impacting your nerve root.

My mom had back surgery several years ago and has severe pain ever since. I have no idea if her surgery was the same as yours. After her surgery she spent time in a rehab hospital and has been seeing a pain management Dr since then.

walked in with pain and walked out with only tenderness around the incision. Haven't had a problem since. The pain before surgery was awful, no way to get comfortable
This was my experience as well.
God bless Dr Kelly Scrantz!

It’s possible they may have made things worse for you man. Gotta let them know.

You might have to get your doctor to schedule an MRI or CT to see that whatever they actually did the surgery for looks as expected. Also while not very common, make sure they didn’t leave anything in there from the surgery

Most people who get a micro discectomy don’t report pain post-surgery due to it being so minimally invasive. Sounds like your surgeon might have fricked up
Yep...I had a laminectomy and I felt so good after the surgery the DR actually told me I needed to rest more because I simply wanted to walk everywhere.
There is a difference between a disectomy and a laminectomy, but since there isn't a fusion, there should be any pain other than the incision area.

Hip/butt cheek, outside of calf to ankle. Right side, same side.

Was given round of steroids after first surgery and pain wasn't as bad until steroids wore off, he had me do another MRI didn't see anything else, then when I went back for follow up is when he suggest a second micro discectomy to explore for further damage. Said that it was severely inflamed but no other damage. Put me on steroids again after second surgery. Pain became worse towards the end of steroid pack and now is horrible about 5 days after finishing steroids.

It's always crazy to me that we have doctors here who can post advice like this and 2 threads down you can see people argue about the proper tool for washing an arse crack

I’m praying for you, bro. Be stoic in your suffering. It’s really the only choice. And then one day, you will feel better.

I had a synovial cyst between L4 and L5. Pressed on nerve for about 2 years. Then one day I was in excruciating pain and could not walk. Got the cyst removed and a fusion to stabilize the area. When I woke up, I was screaming in pain. The nerve and nerve root were severely inflamed. Not fun. It got better with gabapentin and narcotics but took a while. Nerve pain is no joke. Good luck.

You are unfortunately in that 10% that struck out with a microdiscectomy
Of the 90% that have success, 60% hit a HR like me, 20% hit a double or triple, and 10% single
It was 6 weeks before I could sleep all night, but I worked the day after surgery. Had no back symptoms prior to my left foot going numb and the next day I couldn't stand up.
Showed up to neuro appt in a wheelchair 8 days later. Admitted that night, put under at 8;30 am and was walking at 1;15 pm at my house over an hour away.
Sounds like you're headed for a fusion

It turns out the rod had caused a crack in the hip bone and it moved about 3/4” of an inch before it healed in place. We found out weeks later as my family member suffered. The physical therapist also missed it.
I guess that PT didn’t have his X-ray eyes with him that day

I also got a steroid injection where the nerve root came out. I'm good as new now so there is hope.

And then, get some soup. Take a nap.

I'm taking 300mg 3x a day. They said to expect some discomfort but man this isn't discomfort. This is straight up excruciating pain whenever I get up.
I know many are against it but try Maryjane man.
Have someone pick you up some legally and take a couple of edibles.

TBH, I know two people that have had back surgeries and neither would do it again, if given the chance to go back.
Hope yours is better

From experience the intense pain post discectomy surgery is caused by the sciatic nerve being propped out of the way during surgery. Was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. It will subside as long as nothing is wrong with the surgery. Good luck
