I usually spent at least $750 a semester on books before Barnes and Noble was at LSU. Even at UNO, my book total for 3-4 classes was, at a minimum, $500/semester. New editions are added to textbooks once a year, so the school takes the old ones out of circulation if they have extras. If you have a class that requires an online access code, you have to buy a new book at full price. For both of my degrees, the online codes were only separately available for core freshman classes like sciences or maths.
Some of our teachers were aware of the textbook racket, and would list homework problems from several different versions. The material is exactly the same. You could save hundreds buying a used book online. They'd also sometimes scan the books if the prices were too outrageous and cheaper versions weren't available

Let’s say there were 10 students in the class, couldn’t they all just put up $100, one person buy the book, save it, and then give it to the other students??

I hope there is some blow in that textbook.

Didn't say it was okay with me. I'm just a former student and was explaining more of the story. I think their reasoning is because computers/tablets are a distraction. It's a policy I disagree with wholeheartedly.
Basically the whole point of my original post was not to defend the university, but to point out that the online textbook was not the students' only option and (assuming the department's policy hasn't changed in the last few years) students couldn't bring the electronic version to class anyway. However, it's still pretty messed up.

This is why I'm not in college. It's a money scheme for a degree most people don't even utilize.

The students need to buck up and pay their tuition, books, room and board. I graduated with no loans! I worked summers at the local Dairy Queen dammit for my $500 a semester education! The students should do the same instead of taking to their "fancy social media" and bitching!
I worked on the pipe line in the summer and paid my college! Kids these days don’t know how to make money all they do is fort night and instant gram!

So this is what happened:
1. Teacher or department wants to make some extra money, so they become an “author” of that specific book, sometimes this is by changing a few questions or even the order of chapters.
2. The department only makes their “kickback” if the student purchases the book new. Usually this means that they put in tear out sheets in this book to make it where you can’t sell it again.
So in order to stop people from buying other versions or using another persons old book and just buying the online thing they jacked the price up to $999

I’m just saying, if a book costs $1000 it better give me the secret to life.

Knew a textbook salesman and the guy was absolutely loaded. He had a vacation home, 2 boats, a RV, traveled around the world all the time.
