Water cooled machine guns are actually superior for a fortified position with no expectation of movement. You can pretty much fire them indefinitely.

I do not know about indefinitely but 110 years and still going strong.

The 1911 design .45 is still produced today, and is one of the most popular handguns. Old does not necessarily mean inferior.
