That's only when there's no practical way to get them down. They try when they can.

That's a masterpiece of ambiguity considering the history. I upvoted.

don't understand mountain climbing. It's like... why?
If I got you on a summit you'd know why.
RIP Ueli

Jesus... check out this YouTube video of him decimating what looks more like a cliff than a mountain.
That's amazing, the only caveat is though nature only has to win once, and this was her time
Love the video from his 2008 Eiger ascent. The run up the final snowfield and then along the ridge is nuts.

Yep. And the dangers of Everest on technical climbing pale in comparison to K2, Annapurna and others.
Of course he wasn't on the standard Everest route. He was using the west ridge route which claims half the lives of those who attempt it and trying without oxygen.

They may have. Depends on what parts of him they were able to find

Damn just looked up the Annapurna mountain (mastiff). The Himalayas are incredible.

He didn't die on Everest. He was doing a training climb on a nearby mountain (Nuptse) before going up Everest.

You may not consider it to be fun but plenty of people do.
People enjoy the solitude, thrills, and challenges.

Sometimes it is good to step back and ask yourself questions that go beyond your personal ambitions and desires. Is this good for my long-term growth and development as a human being? Is this good for my wife and kids? My parents and siblings?
Once you get into serious climbing, that community is your family. I had the great pleasure of climbing Kilimanjaro (well, walking up it) and Rainier so although I'm not by any means a "pro" I got the introduction.
The wife and family not only knew what they were getting into, but were climbers themselves.

I read he was just leaving one of the base camps. And the last trip he made two years ago he and others got into a very fierce fight with some local guides.
That being said if any of you ever read that jeffsdad body was found at the base of Driskill Mountain in pieces, I want a full investigation. Spare no expense. I'm good for it.

No they aren't. That's a feel-good platitude. Are they going to pay the mortgage for your widow? Help the kids with the homework? Be the paternal presence in the home children need? Be the husband to a widow? Be the son to his parents?
I have no problem with any extreme athlete having free will and the right to do anything he damn well pleases. Including tempting fate, playing statistical Russian Roulette and even dying. But lets not go creating indefensible myths. The fact is, when a climber dies there is no magic Dad/Husband/Son/ "replacement" from his Dad's climbing "family". There are just a bunch of really bummed out friends who place their own needs above the needs of others. That's certainly their right, but lets not make up lazy cliches to lesson the blow.
