“NASCAR is only worth watching for the crashes “

My roommate got me to go with him to the Riverside 500 stock car race when I was stationed in California.
He was totally captivated the whole frickin 4 hours,I was bored out of my mind.
Couldn’t tell who was winning, red car might be ahead of the blue car when they went by but the blue car might actually be ahead of the red car by several laps.

I kept hoping for a good crash.
(Am I retarded ?)

Thank God they were able to eject. Can we stop wasting millions of dollars on air shows?

Midairs don’t just happen at airshows. And time in the cockpit is still valuable to the pilots and crews.

Obviously you don’t want any kinds of mishaps but flying jets is inherently dangerous. As long as jets fly, there will be crashes no matter what they’re doing.

Per the rules they’ll have to miss the first half of the next air show.

Their careers are over. They’ll be sent to low level supervisory positions in maintenance, administration, etc.

I served under a Lt. DO at one time that had been yanked from a flying billet. He was a P-3 guy and he forgot to extend his landing gear. Belly skid. So he was sent to carriers in various low level division officer jobs. The men called him “Belly Up” behind his back. It was clear he had no future in the Navy so when his obligation was up he went back to civilian life.

Israeli trained rape planes. Always carry pilots, even the buddy system can fail.

Yeah…that sounds like buffoonery. That dude absolutely should never fly again. I’m almost certain there’s a whole “extend gear/check lights” mental process that happens. Doesn’t seem like something you’d “just forget” :/

In this case, and this is a layman hot take, it looks like the jet coming in from the top is a wingman (2) trying to rejoin on lead (1). If that’s what happened, 1 likely didn’t do anything wrong here.

How do these jets not have, essentially, collision avoidance like your average SUV?

AP says all pilots are safe

It is amazing that parts of those chutes didn’t get tangled with the planes.

They try to get as close as possible to one another to pull off cool maneuvers.

No one would ever fly that close to another plane under normal circumstances.

The answer of

Might be a little flippant but I think it’s correct. “Fast and close” is what you do when you’re flying in formation in an air show.

If they had a collision avoidance system that worked the way it works in cars, it would just be going off nonstop for the entire demo.

I took 2.5 years of Navy ROTC at the Citadel. One of my instructors was a Naval Aviator. I still remember him saying, "The proper protocol for eject from a jet is to say, "Eject, Eject, Eject three times and reach up and pull the ejection handles. But if it ever happens to me, as soon as I hear E.... I'm gone."
