Idk, just my short story. Hadn’t thought about it till that video. Guess I can laugh about it now, just not on my list of preferred capts.

The professional and mature approach would have been "OK guys, reel your lines up. We are done for the day and heading back in."
Does this look like the kind of douche bag that knows how to act mature and professional?

What engine brand do you have? I tried to google my Suzukis last night and pretty much the only thing that comes up is ‘high idle’ engine issues. I’ll look at my manual today.
New Suzis have the ability to put into "idle only" mode with touch of a single button. Not on the throttle, but on the console next to key. Never thought of it much before, but hitting said button will become a regular practice of mine. Point I attempt to make, is its available, and VERY easy on new platforms.

Surely another fishing charter offered a free trip to these guests. We can’t have this family have that be their last charter experience.

Now how many times while your trolling you leave the motor in gear while you go back to the stern?
Not that uncommon, especially if he didn’t have a deckhand.
Not really a big deal if no boats around. When wahoo fishing you keep engine in gear when you hook up to keep the fish on and to keep other troll baits swimming. That being said we just fun fish and everyone on the boat actually has common sense and knows what they’re doing.

Bingo
Clients here may have never been offshore before and that in itself is a challenge whether or not you’re on a charter. Fishing solo a captain has a lot of work with a group of four.

Make sure everyone on board knows how to disable it.
I stay on everybody's arse about watching distance to the rig and getting on the helm if we start getting close. It's really easily to accidently disable spotlock on an I pilot trolling motor, get all caught up in the moment, and end up in the rig when uphill from it.
Very important everyone onboard knows how to get the boat away from danger if needed. If they just start gassing on it without disabling that feature, smashy smashy

This video is just like arrest videos that only show the actual fight. There's no real context. The captain said "never had I been on a trip like this". That leads me to believe it's been a shite show from the jump.

That dude was an a-hole, and ironically exactly why I myself do not work in the customer service industry.

running a charter boat has got to be one of the least stressful gigs I can think of

When you have knowledgeable people on board and the fish are biting, sure
When you have idiots like the family in the video or douchebags that will complain about anything short of a limit or bad weather I'd imagine it's miserable
I know a few people that dabbled in it and got out because it took out the enjoyment of fishing. The only guy I know that still does it will not take new customers, repeats only
Posted on 8/22/23 at 11:34 am to redneck
Exactly lol. A lot of your customers will be barely functional idiots or a group of dudes that are trashed an hour after you leave the dock. And they do nothing but complain and ask questions, tear up your boat and break your shite.
The guides that are really good and run off mainly repeat customers have it pretty good though.
I fish pretty frequently and don’t think I could ever be a guide. It would ruin being able to enjoy fishing for me.

Maybe they should've had their post docs work on the statement.

I'm not excusing his behavior. Like I said, I think it is fair to share this with the business owner and let them handle it.
This.
Be an adult and take it up with the business owner if you aren't happy. Show him the video and give him the opportunity to handle it. Unfortunately, we are now a world where we release videos on social media (without any context) to a worldwide audience with the SPECIFIC GOAL to ruin someone's life/business.
In no way am I condoning this bozo's reaction. But it seems VERY unlikely he went from 0 to 1000 simply because of one "accident". I'd bet dollars to donuts the customers weren't listening to anything he was saying, which led to them eventually doing something stupid that could have cause a very dangerous and tragic outcome. I could understand being beyond pissed off at that point. However, as a professional, (as hard as it may be) he should have kept his cool and calmly ended the trip.
Still, releasing the video is a chickenshit move. Particularly if you remained on the trip and (purportedly) had a good time the rest of the way. Now you have decided to become a "victim" and harm a whole company...not just one person..solely for "internet fame".
I credit the customer for remaining calm when this fricking wackjob was going nuts in front of his children. That would have been really hard to do. But it was a pussy move to release the video. Show it to the owner and talk to him first.
