Just catching up on this. They actually passed this corrupt tax? I guess I shouldn't be more surprised.

That is what I have gathered, people thought she would be a moderate Democrat, similar to Kip. I think the support of the Business Report exacerbated that opinion.

So does anyone know what happens now with the council on aging saga? Was this the last step in trying to nail these crooks, or are there additional actions that can be taken to protect the tax funds?

They'll have a bit more oversight from the council with quarterly reports required. And annually the council can elect to distribute the funds or not.

Did anyone notice the asking of basic questions tonight like "what are the requirements for someone to sign up for your services?"
How the hell did these folks get a tax on the ballot and get it passed when our elected officials don't know the first thing about what they do? BTW, in addition to all the taxes we are also paying big bucks to renovate that huge building on airline which we are then lease it then for $2300 a month.

I did see that and it was sad.
Now we handed over money to a group that has no real oversight and can do what they want with our tax dollars.
Do you blame them if they blow they money?
The state and Feds have failed to do anything. The metro council will always get the votes to pass taxes to programs with no oversights. They got a free pass to blow tax dollars.
I can see any new taxes coming up having trouble passing after the COA tax in this parish.

On the bright side, these reports and annual votes will generate some more good Will Cover threads

Landry has the audit findings. He and JBE hate each other so if John Bel didn't have incentive enough to look the other way already as a Democrat, to spite Landry is a bonus so he won't lift a finger to touch that crew.
But Landry can nail them and then whomever is Governor would be incredibly foolish NOT to pull their charter and dissolve the board and start over. At that point the GOEA would also be under his appointees control and between stacking the newly formed EBRCOA and GOEA you'd see transparency and quality management.
One hopes you'd bring in a former government beancounter who dedicated so much of the tax towards services that whomever came in after wouldn't be able to divert funding away for political machine work that Tasha and company are about to roll into high gear with...

The political part of this whole thing was laughable. She explained away the political flyer mailing scandal as her providing candidate info to seniors who can't "get out of the house to learn about candidates." Ummmm they have TV and the internet. This isn't 1920 when you have to go to a political rally to hear a candidate speak.
Not to mention that she SOLD those candidate blurbs as ad space. Kept the money from the ads for her use in pushing the tax AND they only offered this "ad space" to democratic candidates. This single issue, all by itself, should have been cause to not give an organization run by her tax dollars. Infuriating.

Exactly
Like I said before, our leadership let us down. They were too busy fighting SG I guess.
Kip, the Council, and the leaders in the parish did nothing but rubber stamp this thing and they continue to do so.

What happens to the money if the metro council decides not to give it to the coa?

How do you run for city council? It can't be that tough
It's not and you don't even have to be intelligent or have common sense.

Several of these council people weren't there when this tax first went through and was put on the ballot.

quote:they get sued..... the voters approved the millage, up to the 2.2.. the council could not have given 0.0. they had to give app or a portion of the millage. a vote took place for 1.3 and failed. Idiots even voted on the o.o and it failed, even though the parish attorney said it was illegal to give 0.0, they still voted since there was a motion on the floor. a last second vote switch by barbara fireberg delivered the entire 2.2

City Council deserves blame but so do the people who voted for it. Much like CATS it was pretty evident the organization was poorly run. Sure we didn't know how poorly run and perhaps there should've been some investigations previously, but ultimately this is on the people.
