Turnover in downtown Baton Rouge bars in the past few years

Since Broom took office, there's been a lot of changes over the past few years:
These places have closed and are either being re-purposed to office space or has no known replacement.
The rumors are that the city has cracked down on open containers for a few blocks on 3rd street to target bars owned by people that were not friendly to the Broome administration. That's extremely corrupt if true.
Another contributing factor is a shift away from an entertainment district to more of a business-focused neighborhood with additional hotel rooms and apartments opening up on Lafayette, 3rd, 4th, and 6th streets. The demand could be more for fast-casual restaurants over bars and entertainment - which is a change in format (and a driver in increasing market rental prices) over what most of the available spaces offer in the area.
So do the bar concepts that can no longer be viable on prime downtown locations shift towards the refurbished Government Street area or somewhere else downtown?

I dont care for Broome, but cracking down on open container laws is not the reason most of those businesses failed.

I heard they’re charging $5 for a wristband that will get you into Happy’s, Bourdeaux and Thibs, and City Bar. When I was at LSU, I couldn’t imagine paying any kind of cover at any of those places.

$5 for each or one wristband that'll get you into all?

I know memphis does something like that, but it has been a long time since ive had to pay a cover in downtown BR.
Went to a wedding reception at DeLaronde Hall (spelling?) across from City Bar and as the bride/groom were leaving the CB bouncer was trying to get everyone to head there. He was even going to let us in without cover. From across the street the place looked empty, they seemed desperate.
Downtown BR relies heavily on students and even then there are better bar options closer to the students. They built all these apartments downtown that are way over the price range for anyone just getting out of college. Another example of poor city planning.

I can understand charging a cover to an 18 year old who is just liability but it chaps my arse when a bar makes me spend money to go inside and spend money.

Precisely. Paying a cover to spend money inside of a bar, irks me.

This must be really recent. I moved away from BR two years ago and I don't think they were charging any sort of cover. Happy's and B&T's especially

This place would work in another city.
It was too hipster and pretentious for downtown Baton Rouge.
Also, I went once with my dad, who lives downtown and they wouldn't let us in because it was only open for people that reserved a table on social media. The place was almost empty at the time, I'm talking 15 open tables. It was some push they had to generate social media hits.
So my dad, who would be happy to spend his money downtown to support local spots, especially ones with good coffee and breakfast, immediately swore off the place.

I think this is accurate. Over the past decade, there have been several good restaurants and bars pop up around the city. Downtown entertainment district does not have many of their target demographics live nearby. No one wants to pay for a $50 round-trip uber ride to downtown when they can go to one of the newer restaurants or bars near them and not have to try to avoid several homeless people harassing them.

By far, the worst MP in my lifetime.
BUT, not all of the bar closings are on her. Certain owners of certain bars didn't pay their taxes even though tHEy have run or would like to run for office.

I agree, but if they rezoned 3rd street to allow it after 7 PM and put barricades up at night to prevent people from leaving with the drinks, it would really be a boost to those businesses.

City Bar is trash, that’s why they were empty

One so many businesses will survive right now. I don't think that's really a bad sign, that's just a correction in the demand that is there.
List all the places that are still open.

It is done to prevent "undesirables" from coming in that don't spend a single cent.
What they should do is charge $5, give you a token, then you can redeem that token for $5 off your bill.
Works in other places.

Glad Broome destroyed the plans for the street car from LSU to downtown that the federal government was picking up most of the tab for. Because it didn't help minorities.
Bitch, it was basically a gift from the Feds.
What a fricking idiot.
