Thanks for the post. In the mid 70’s, as a child, I often passed St Charles Tavern. There was a help wanted sign in the window for months perhaps years. I was comforted knowing that if I never amounted to anything I could gain employment.

Great post.

In 1998 I illegally turned left off of St. Charles onto Louisiana. I saw the streetcar and thinking it was stopped I turned in front of it.

It smacked my rear bumper. I had 212 miles on the truck.

The streetcar stopped and the conductors blocked the doors to keep would be litigators out of the car.

The car was full of Asian’s who thought it was all great fun and were happily snapping photos.

I charmed the responding NOPD officer into not giving me a ticket.

Two days after Katrina her son called to rent a storage in Houma. He had what she had salvaged.

We connected the dots and I reconnected with the kind NOPD lady officer.

I kept her stuff for two years rent free. Small world.

There have been a few people have posted that you’re a troll. others have posted that you’re autistic, Or on the spectrum. Do you know what you are though? A rare breed. An autistic troll.

I love his post and always look forward to them. Mother and I spend countless hours drinking chickory and coffee while discussing his most recent post on TD.

Thank you for posting this. I graduated from Loyola and these signs bring back great memories. I used to love going to Tulane for the food and to read the Hullabaloo.

Fascinating history of the Houston's building you told. There is a marker by the Felicity entrance concerning Higgins Industries. Higgins' corporate offices in those days were located at the former Pythian Temple, 234 Loyola, another interesting building.

As a bit of trivia, Houston's wasn't actually Houston's for a year or so in 2006. The ownership rebranded it "Gulfstream" after Katrina and tried to make it a high end seafood restaurant like GW Fins. It didn't go over well and was quickly converted back to Houston's.

Where do you get the historical information on these buildings? Historic collection? Notarial archives?

My grandmother lived with my family from before I was born until her death. Her father had a small sugar cane plantation and was in the civil war. One of her brothers came of age and left the plantation, made it to New Orleans and became a street car conductor. She had a picture of him on her dresser in his conductor uniform with hat. He looked like a kind man. I always tell people, if anyone is in heaven, it’s my grandmother. I have that picture now. One of my favorites. My grandmother was always a hard worker. From early on had a small brownie camera. I have many wonderful pictures that she had taken. In my opinion, old family pictures are your.most valuable possession. Thanks for the street car stories.
