Friends,

It recently came upon me to travel far from home. As part of that travel, I found myself in a place called China. It was quite surprising really. One minute I was in Louisiana and a few minutes later, China. As the world marches lockstep into the limitless abyss of monotonous repetition along our interstates, where every exit has become a mirror of the one ten miles ahead, a mass confusion of systems and loss of choice and independence, I chose to take the backroads. And it is on the backroads that you never know what you will find.

Along that old highway, I came across horses, old highway hotels, 50s era gas stations, a Quickrete concrete plant, and abandoned grain silos. The old silos were most interesting to me, and had it not been for the no trespassing signs, I would have entered and explored. In all of China, though, no Chinese food was to be found. I found plenty of it later on, a story for the coming days, and now my stomach burns.

And now, that for which you clicked the link. My apologies for not writing more, but I am so utterly exhausted after walking the length of Bellaire Blvd in Houston today.

I read all your posts as if they were narrated by Daniel Craig’s detective character in Knives Out.

Friend,
I'm taking off a few days and heading to Paris next week.
I was able to get the Hampton Inn off the NE Loop hwy 286. I'm looking forward to the outdoor pool.

Yours,
LaBR4

I hope they put the good china out for your visit there.

Safe travels to you and thanks for the interesting update.

Brother,

First of all I wish to express my love and affection to both you and mother and hope that this note finds you well.
.
Why the hell didn't you let me know you were in Texas we could have gone to midweek service together.

Sincerely,
Owl

Dear TulaneLSU,

Your mom called. She says you've been in the basement for 2 weeks on your computer and wants you to come outside and feel the grass.

Yours truly,
Jason Dwayne Blaha

Friend,

I thought I might add the origin of the name as it might be of interest to your readers:

Per Wiki

quote:

China was first known as "China Grove", for a water stop for the Texas and New Orleans Railroad that sat amidst a grove of chinaberry trees. In the 1860s a small community grew around the water stop, and another a few miles away named Nashland. A post office with the name "China" was established there in 1893. When fire destroyed the China Grove depot in 1906, the railroad rebuilt in the larger Nashland area, but retained the established name "China" as the name of the depot. The Nashland post office changed its name to China shortly afterward. It wasn't until 1971 that the (now-merged) community voted to incorporate as the city of China, Texas.

The water stop is in reference from the steam engine era as those behemoths were thirsty beasts.

No, that one is in SE San Antonio. I thought about mentioning that but did not want to mar a TulaneLSU thread with drug references.

Friend, perhaps you can borrow Mother’s Mercedes and pick up Owlie. You two could have quite the adventure which would generate many top 10 lists.
