I remember getting my first cell phone at my first job out of college in about 2000-2001 so probably around there.

I gave the ladies my beeper number before that time

Last time? Probably in an airport (late 90’s or early 2000s) to give an update as to my arrival time.

Spin-off: remember those phone cards you could use to place long distance calls at pay phones? I think I still have one with a $10 balance in my wallet?

Per chance, was this the office?

Can't even tell you the last time I've seen one.

I remember at 13 though going to University basketball games and me and friends would dial numbers like 1-800-TITTIES to see if any sex line would pick up

Camp Johnson. Field med training

The ole calling card. I think I saw my 1st camera phone at that same time.

I remember a working pay phone on the corner on TT 1 Camp Lejeune base housing after that. 2004.

I used one a couple of days after Katrina. I lived in Asheville and was in Bogalusa checking on relatives. There was no cell phone service, and even pay phones had only intermittent service. My granddaughter was looking after our home in Asheville, and I called our landline phone collect. When I got my bill a few weeks later, that three-minute collect call was over $30.

It’s actually “Death Nell”

The term originated from the 1994 movie starring Jodie Foster

Pay phones saved my arse many times after little practice. Parent’s pickup dependability was different in early 90’s.

My last time was 1998 to let the wife know I was leaving a batchelor party the night after a strip club binge that I was on my way home

Around 2000-2001 I was dating a girl whose parents were always looking for a side hustle. For some reason they chose pay phones. You can buy them, like vending machines, and then go collect the change out of them every week. But of course the actual phone and phone line cost money.

Well suddenly all of these pay phones are for sale and her parents got giddy. Of course this was right around the time flip phones were blowing up but her idiot parents didn't connect the dots even though I tried to warn them. It was like that South Park episode where Randy Marsh bought the Blockbuster store in 2010.

2006, Ft Benning. Used them to call home during basic training. Can’t remember any other time before that.

I'm reasonably sure I last used a pay phone in 2009.

I remember starting to see empty shells in public places shortly after that.

Probably 1998'ish. I used to carry change so I could use the pay phone at my job so I didn't have to ask to use the phone in the office.

Remember making calls to my mom to come pick me up on the few occasions i didn't have my car there with me.

Those couple of calls are probably the only calls I ever made on a pay phone period.

Kind of a random side note, but this post jogged a memory of mine from the late 1990s when i saw ‘motivational speaker’ Tony Robbins in a club on Bourbon St.. if youve never seen him in person, he’s a giant dude- im 6’2” and he towered over me, he’s gotta be 6’6” at least.. but what surprised me is when i saw him he was on a payphone in the lobby of this club; he was probably on a call that went 30 or 45 min, and i remember being surprised he wasnt on a cellphone b/c while i didnt have a cellphone yet myself, many people i knew did.. though maybe his had crapped out on him or soemthing , very possible in those very early cellphone days .

Pay phones are still everywhere inside Disney Word. A quick Google search shows they’re still operational, offering free local calls. An operator can also assist with parking-related issues (I think).
