Our government is pretty analogous to the 1913 government as well
I know you’re being sarcastic. But, you’re thinking in the wrong way. Instead of thinking how this won’t work because our government is so much bigger and spends so much more than it did before 1913 when it was funded mostly by tariffs, we should be looking to shrinking the federal government, along with its spending, to where it can once again function on the money it collects in tariffs and abolish the constitutional abomination that is federal income taxes.

Also, you won’t like how high that rate would have to be. As much as the talking point of the rich paying their fair share is used, they really do pay the overwhelming majority of taxes.
BINGO!

Mississippi just passed legislation to eliminate the state income tax. If federal income tax were to be eliminated as well, there would basically be no income taxes to run the government. In that instance I would have to predict ungodly sales taxes, property taxes and vehicle taxes.
That will never happen.

This is going to happen on the day after Trump gets Mexico to pay for his border wall.

How can this lead to a balanced budget?

The problem that many advocates of a flat tax don't take into account is the group that pays the most taxes now spend the lowest percentage of their income on taxable goods and services. It will be highly regressive and I expect the average households up to at least $500k in income will be paying more federal tax because the HNWIs and UHNWIs will mostly be paying significantly less because they spend less of their disposable income.

We’re fricked either way.

Thread title says “eliminate” income tax, but the article says “help reduce” income tax.
These are extremely different scenarios.

Is there anyone other than those in fast food making less than $200K a year?
Posted on 4/28/25 at 7:43 am to Skenes
So some of the tariffs are or will be as high as 45%. A household of 4 earning $200K a year probably pays somewhere in the neighborhood of $25k in federal income tax. If they save about 5% for retirement they are probably spending about 50% of their income after retirement savings or somewhere in the neighborhood of $95K. Tariffs averaging on that $95K in spending will be around $19K and the inflation / unemployment / and increase in federal debt will make further diminish their income....so they save $6k in taxes and spend $10k or so to do so.....
And of course that would mean that they actually eliminated their entire federal tax burden...ain't gonna happen LOL but its a nice thought....
