Not hard to figure out the ethnicity of the assailants.

The dude was Asian so the law won’t do shite.

When I was there there was some issue with garbage pick up and there was literally trash everywhere.
Plus I always stayed in Hells Kitchen. Which other than the name was actually the best place for foodies and times Square adjacent. Great when Broadway shows were important.

I spent some time in Hell's Kitchen back in the day for Fleet Week. It was pretty rough, but we had a good time. Times Square back then had porno, peep shows, hookers, pimps, dealers, and shite. I never felt unsafe, but I was young then and sketchy areas never bothered me. Nowadays, I would prefer not to get stabbed by a migrant when the wife and I go into the city for lunch.

It’s actually unsettling to think about.

You would be surprised. I live in Manhattan and it often feels much smaller. You end up living in a neighborhood—one of the villages, Upper West, etc.—and you will see a lot of the same people around because they’re on the same schedules and have similar interests. I see the same people every morning when walking my kids to school. It’s the same people at the coffee shop and grocery. Same people on the train, going to work at the same time. Even people in your building and block become small communities that you build relationships with.

That said, I have a family and already knew people in the city. I’m sure it would be tough moving here by yourself unless you’re extroverted.

I had an opportunity to move to NYC to live. Some days I’d be thrilled at the prospect. Other days I’d be terrified. It’s facts like these that scare me. Like agoraphobia almost. Like … how do you meet people connect with people make friends do anything when you are just …….. in an inconceivably large collection of people like that? Like nobody gives a frick about you or what you’re doing. Everyone you pass on the street will never pass you again. It’s actually unsettling to think about.

This is a really odd perspective. I walk and drive past people in Baton Rouge I’ll never see again. My friends are people who live near me, who I’ve worked with, who I’ve gone to school with, etc. It’s generally the same for people in NYC. The only difference is that where Baton Rouge has tens of thousands of individual friend groups, NYC has a million. The mechanism is the same; the only difference is in scope.

I've spent a ton of time in SF and went to NYC recently for a few weeks and was actually shocked how not bad it was. It was a fricking utopia compared to SF.

why are people so adamant that nyc, specifically, is in some unprecedented downward spiral of crime?

Because Fox News tells them so.

You cut the city into a smaller slice. You have your immediate neighborhood, and then a short list of places that you frequent.

I am taking my 2 kids in May. One is an LSU recent grad and the other will be a HS grad. That's where they wanted to go the most.

That said...doing all the touristy things- Times Sq, Statue of Liberty, NBC, and Yankee game also.

I have been probably 10 times and never felt unsafe. Just dont be an idiot and stay out til 5am.
