I read this before I left for work this morning. I noticed two billboards within a mile of each other for trucking companies hiring. One was promoting a $6,000 sign on bonus and the other was $10,000.

“We see very strong hiring for delivery drivers and truck drivers

It's really becoming a problem. We ship freight 4-5x a week and it's become a headache every time. I often have to stay 30-60 minutes after the posted dock close time for pickup. This is after seeing the freight truck pass by 3-4x earlier in the day. Drivers just don't give a shite because they're in such high demand.

I would love to switch to a truck driving job. I think it would be fun, and was something my father did for a living.

If you are shipping 4-5X a week and your carrier is treating you like that it is time for a new carrier. Do you deal direct with the LTL carrier or use a third party logistics for your freight? If you use third party the carrier is not make jack, and is not very concerned about you.

We use several different carriers regularly. Who we use is normally dictated by the customer. We deal direct.

Just think how many drivers are needed in a day to supply small business in a city. These guys are not cross country guys they are local haulers.

My buyer and receivers have it down pat where they rarely work OT unless it is the spring time or Xmas season.

Lumber & plywood - I send my own 3rd party drivers to the mill on directs

Roofing- I send my own 3rd party driver as I do not want the mill to know which stores or customers the loads are going to. Some go direct to my roofing customers versus store.

LTL- dictated by some customers. Usually the carriers come the same day each week. Their dispatch calls our guys to check if they need a afternoon pickup by 2 pm.

Lawn mowers and tractors - I always buy a truck and never split them. Have a third party broker handle this as I may split shipments between four locations. My stores pay the driver directly for extra stops. The drivers they send are use to working with these mfg’s warehouses and getting loaded quickly.

Orgill hardware - Pretty much their driver, same day each week, and it is usually the same guy. I always get him an Xmas gift. The people in receiving like him.

Propane gas and soft drink companies- their salesman check my stock and they usually come on Tues and Fri.

Package ice- they are pretty good. They usually come MWF and the driver calls to see if we need a ice on Sat.

Ups and fedex- they come in the morning and if they do not have a delivery at night they call the receiver to see if they need to pickup packages. They seem to like the drivers. I get them a small Xmas gift $50 Visa card. They do a good job and they know my employees personalities

shite, they desperately need a lot more than that.

It's so bad, that they are begging and offering the guys trying to retire, nice bonuses and pay to stay on. They have no choice.

I work in the Waste and Recycling industry and my company is hurting for CDL drivers in a big way. So much demand for drivers no one wants to mess with driving a trash truck.

Do they get bonuses per number of cars backed up by passing in the left lane going 65mph?

Electronic logs have also increased demand. Drivers now have to follow the law regarding how long they can drive per day and how many hours off are required between shifts.

Yep the days of running across the country with 2 or 3 log books are over, this is having a huge impact on trying to get trucks under your loads.

I would gladly trade my stressful job for a trash truck driving job if it paid similar.

If Hurricane Florence does the damage to the East Coast that is starting to be forecasted, the trucking industry is going to be adding thousands of additional loads to the system.

In fact, all the publicly traded trucking company stocks had major increases today.

XPO share holder here

we ship our own goods from 4 plants across the country in dull and LTL loads. Nothing for use to ship 200 flatbeds and vans a month. rates are up 25% from brokers and 5-10% from the owner/opp and smaller outfits 5-15 trucks, since ELD's became mandatory. Availability has added about 2 days to lead times.

Commercial driving is going way up, before it goes down. The demands aren’t sustainable at the pay and talent pool out there. Transit, freight, local....

There is a huge incentive for driverless vehicles. Don’t expect to retire in the field if you enter now.

Guy I worked with went to trucker school this summer. Said he felt like he was being recruited by colleges for a sport the way all the companies were pitching to him to hire on with them from signing bonuses to benefits, etc.
