Trucking company payrolls soared in August, growing at the fastest 12-month pace since 2015 as logistics operators boosted hiring to keep pace with booming freight demand.

Overall the U.S. economy added 201,000 jobs, a pickup from July, and unemployment held steady at 3.9%.

“The growth of e-commerce is making transportation and warehousing the new retail,” said Andrew Chamberlain, chief economist for recruiting site Glassdoor. “We see very strong hiring for delivery drivers and truck drivers and anyone touching e-commerce, including warehouse and material handlers.”

Those workers are also earning more, as employers boost wages to lure staff in a tight labor market. Pay for delivery drivers is up 10.2% from January 2015, while wages for material handlers and truck drivers rose 9.3% and 9.1%, respectively, over the same period, according to Glassdoor.

You baws get out there and hit the open road and get paid.

You'd think people who make a living driving would be better at it.

we need to improve our railroad infrastructure and cut down on the amount of trucks on the road.

I’m not in the business or close, but rail is overrated for most things. It’s great for mid distances like 8-10 hours by car. But you have to get things to the railroads, then get it loaded, then get it to the destination, then get it unloaded, then get it to the final destination. With trucking you simply drive it straight to the destination. Time is money and cutting out all those steps saves a lot of time. It takes awhile to unload an entire train.

You want rail crossings basically everywhere? You have to get the cargo from the rail to its actual destination.

Same.

I'm looking into it again, because it's paying higher than most non-medical white collar gigs here in Chattanooga.

Rail can't deliver goods to the final destination (storefront). Literally every product you use or buy was on a truck at least once before it got to you.

Rail is also terrible at getting things to places quickly. What may take a truck 8 hours may take 3 days by rail. Rail is great for bulk over long distances though.

Too bad rail roads don't deliver to the oil field or frac wells.......... Which is a majority of these jobs here.

If you've got time and it's a cross country move, rail is the way to go. Cheaper and more reliable.

It is a great time to be a driver with the average age about 58 now and a shortage of over 40,000 drivers. It's just goint to get worse until the pay entices more people to get behind the wheel.
