Truck Board: Do I Need New Gears?

Bought a new truck. Sierra 5.3L 8 speed auto. I haul a camper for work so I went with the max trailering package that up’d my gears from 3.23 to 3.42. I’m wanting to install either a leveling kit or 4” suspension with 33’s/35’s. Not wanting to crawl rocks, just something to give it a more aggressive look and make it easier on the hunting trails. My question is with the larger tires and me pulling a camper some for work would I benefit from new gears? Just trying to not over work my engine and transmission. Can the 3.42’s handle it?

Can't help you, Cheston. Sorry.

How much does the camper weigh loaded with your stuff?

Around 6500. I never haul it with water.

You'll get the answers that you seek on the outdoor board baw.

Yes. Without any research on your specific truck, I'd say something around 4.10.
Don't go up just one gear (say 3.73) not worth the money.

Too old to comprehend this huge waste of money.

I would say one gear up would be minimum, you already covered the trailer towing with the regear, now since your getting taller tires you definitely need at least one gear. If you go with 35s, I would go up two like beam said.

He should be able to tow that camper stock....

Sure. He "can", but his transmission is going to hate him. Especially with 35s

Throw on a set of BFGs. Don’t lift or change gears. BFGs will look good plus going from a 32” to a 35” will have a minimal clearance impact anyway.

Good question. The formula for your answer is:
penis length x wheel size / penis girth + inches above factory lift.

Would a tuner benefit me more than changing gears?

I have Chevy with that package.
I can tow a camper at 7200 plus just fine. Never had an issue.

What size tires are you running?
