Ok, so I keep seeing the word “gyre” and it’s a new one for me. What does it mean?

I am no rds…
But with the central american monsoon i think you get this broad persistent area of low pressure that can spin stuff off. Usually early and late in season. And usually sloppy and disorganized

NOAA.gov
quote:
What is a gyre?
A gyre is a large system of rotating ocean currents.
...
While this use of "gyre" is increasingly common, the term traditionally refers simply to large, rotating ocean currents.
or when discussing meteorology... it's a large swirling system of rain and if it, or part of it, really tightens up it becomes a tropical system

Motherfricker. I leave for Pensacola on Monday. Of course. Last year our last day was marred by Hurricane Hanna cutting across the Gulf crashing 6 footers on the beach while getting sandblasted from the wind gusts.

It's basically a big area of low pressure that forms up in central America during the rainy season. Like much bigger than a hurricane bigger.
They'll often be a source of tropical storm genesis, especially in early season. That big low pressure leads to storms and if an area storms enough it'll lead to a low pressure area forming.
The big damage is does is the ridiculous flooding in Central America but it does like to spin off tropical systems too.
Also, don't trust the models for anything but a signal for development at this point. It's going to be hard to nail down the when and exactly where and since that's necessary for track.
It's a long wait and see here.

It’s already showing LC 2 weeks out. They’re never right 2 weeks out. I’m not stressing.

I know you know the game here.
But I'm never replying to just one person in these threads.

Nice MCS through Funroe today. Metar says peak wind of 47 mph at the airport but I bet it was higher some places. We were getting pummeled.

There were decent winds out in front of that whole system. It kinda caught me off guard when the storms were still a ways away and the winds started kicking about 25-30. Got just under 3/4" of rain in about 45 minutes, too.

I agree because we all know 10 day models are money. I would start boarding up now and getting supplies to beat the rush

Where do I get my Official TD Tropical Season Bingo Card, or OTTSBC (tm), since weather guys fricking love incomprehensible acronyms. Weather guys and NASA. I don't get it.
Need to take a cue from astrophysicists. They see that light gets shifted toward the red end of the spectrum by objects moving away from them? Well, that's redshift. They discover that everywhere they look in the cosmos, there are microwave signals in the background? Well, that's the cosmic microwave background. They discover that there's something very black that acts like a hole in the universe? Black hole!
