trophy hunting in Africa is not about controlling the herd, its about tourism and making money
a lot of people don't want to admit it, but without rich white people coming over to Africa to hunt these animals, they would lose almost all of their value and would be poached to extinction
hunting literally makes these animals worth keeping around in the eyes of the local governments

I agree, I have no problem with that scenario and it makes complete sense. But unfortunately that’s not always the case. I traveled to South Africa a few years ago and spoke to my safari guide about it. There are cases where like you mentioned it’s necessary but there’s also plenty where people just do it for the sake of making money, whether poaching for tusks or taking some rich dude out to hunt.

I had no idea this was such a large part of their GDP.

Big game hunting is tacky IMO

Idk there are plenty of people out in these countries that do all they can to stop these poachers. When I was there a few years ago they had tons of patrols out every night looking for poachers, drones, and camera all set up throughout the park. If these patrols catch anyone out there at night they don’t bother to stop and ask questions they just shoot you. Plus these parks are bringing a bunch of tourism money off people just wanting to see these animals up close.

Right. Because they have value due to hunting, and to a lesser extent, safari tourism.

We have the same system in place here with hunting licenses and permits. The money from that funds conservation efforts across the country. That's why I don't bitch about having to buy fishing and hunting licenses.

Absolutely. Hunting is huge here. Farmers in the Midwest know the value of their land and animals on it and will protect their herd due to the value.
Take away that value and those deer become a nuisance.

I had multiple people block me on FB today because I explained what culling the herd meant, and that the animals permitted to be hunted are going to be killed anyway.
Ah Facebook. I was on it for just one day to look at a boat service business page and found myself permanently banned 24 hours later. They must have something on me. I don't know what it is.

There is a very specific set of people that trust Africans but only for hunting permits. Nothing else. Not even getting their Cane's order correct.

but aren't the old and slow of the herd supposed to be killed by a predator?
I think that the predators are not numerous enough to perform that function. The deer in Utah have no natural predators anymore because all the wolves have been killed. There are too many of them, and the hunters keep the numbers under control, which prevents disease from spreading more.

These patrols that look for poachers are usually privately funded, and operated. Game wardens are totally corrupt, and paid off by poachers. Those that operate hotels, and photo safaris that depend on having animals to attract clientele fund most anti-poaching operations. Any money for conservation efforts that goes through official channels is largely stolen. FWIW I lived in Kenya, traveled extensively in East Africa, and spent time in the bush with some of these “operators”.

Pretty old news considering it happened June 8th.

sure, but it funds almost 100% of their conservation efforts.
(Think Kruger National Park security for anti-poaching patrols)
